Frequently Asked Questions About Stamey Auto Parts and Machine
Do I need any special kind of oil for my newly restored engine?
Yes! Older engines, especially with flat tappet camshafts, must use a special break-in oil. Break-in oil contains a high level of zinc which is necessary for proper break-in of camshaft and lifters, as well as the new piston rings. However, break-in oil is only used for the initial thirty minutes of start-up.
Can I use racing fuel in my street car?
Most blends of racing fuel contain lead which should not be used in vehicles that have catalytic converters. VP Racing Fuel does offer some unleaded blends.
What is the most important consideration of an engine? Horsepower? Torque?
Torque is typically the "seat of the pants" feel upon acceleration. Horsepower is felt more in the mid and upper RPM range. Typically, the heavier the vehicle the more torque is required to move that vehicle. The lighter the vehicle, the less torque is needed to move that vehicle at the same rate. Horsepower is more important for higher speed, lighter weight vehicles.
What is an LS engine?
An LS engine is a GM engine family that followed the original small-block Chevrolet. An LS engine primarily came in light trucks and some passenger cars. The benefit of an LS engine is an upgraded ignition system, fuel system, and cylinder heads with a stronger engine block.
