I came into AutoZone around 8:30 p.m. to purchase a basic headlight bulb, and unfortunately, the customer service experience was disappointing from the moment I walked in.
When I first entered the store, the male employee was sitting there and appeared to be occupied. He saw me come in but did not acknowledge me or offer any assistance. I eventually had to approach him myself and ask for help. He then told me, “A young lady will be right with you.” The young lady came out, but instead of assisting me, she began mopping the floor and cleaning the store. I was standing there waiting and thinking, “Are you going to help me?” because I had already made it clear that I needed assistance.
I eventually asked the male employee about purchasing a basic headlight bulb and whether they normally assist customers with changing bulbs. He told me that they do, but that they could not assist me that evening because it was too late. I accepted his explanation, purchased the bulb, and went back to my car.
What really bothered me was what happened afterward. While sitting in my car, I watched the same male employee leave the store with another customer and assist her at her vehicle. He even got inside the vehicle to help her.
I’m not going to make an allegation of discrimination because I don't know what circumstances may have been involved. However, I found it very concerning and confusing that I was told assistance was unavailable because it was too late, while another customer received hands-on assistance from the same employee shortly afterward.
There was also explicit music playing in the store during business hours. At one point, a 50 Cent song was playing with lyrics along the lines of, “I’m a motherf***ing pimp.” I found that inappropriate for a retail business environment where customers are shopping.
Overall, this was not a good customer-service experience. I felt ignored when I first entered the store, had to ask for assistance myself, was left standing while an employee cleaned instead of helping me, was given an explanation that did not appear consistent with what I witnessed afterward, and was subjected to explicit music while in the store.
I hope management takes the time to review what happened and address these customer-service and in-store environment concerns.
