I brought in a dead alternator (purchased just under 3 years ago) to use my one-time swap under their Limited Lifetime Replacement warranty. They didn't have the part in stock but promised it would arrive the next day. At the end of the next day, they had not yet called and I had to call them to confirm it had been delivered. When I finally went in to pick it up, they suddenly refused to honor the straight swap. Instead, they wanted to refund my original purchase and force me to buy the replacement at today's price, an unexpected $150 upcharge that was never mentioned to me beforehand. When I stated I wasn't going to pay an extra $150 for a replacement I was entitled to under warranty, the associate called me a thief. He told me I would be stealing from the store if I didn't fork over the extra money. It took a phone conversation with the manager, Will, just to get him to acknowledge that taking my refund and leaving wasn't "stealing." TL;DR If you want: - Poor quality products - A company that refuses to honor its warranties - To be called a thief by staff for refusing to pay hidden upcharges then go to Advance Auto Parts. Otherwise, save yourself the headache and drive 30 seconds down the road to AutoZone. They offer unlimited swaps at no additional cost on their alternators, and you can get a brand-new part for the same price Advance charges for a refurbished one.

Brakes work by using friction to turn kinetic energy into heat. There are two designs: drum brakes (older), and disc brakes (newer). Both use hydraulic pressure to move a piston outward. In disc brakes, the piston is located inside a caliper that houses brake pads and fits over the rotor. The friction lining on the pads makes contact with the rotor to slow the vehicle. In drum brakes, the piston moves two curved shoes lined with friction material against the inside of the brake drum.
