Ignition interlock device installations usually take 1-2 hours at your local Official Intoxalock Location, depending on the make and model of your vehicle. You can either wait for the installation to be complete in a waiting area or can drop off your vehicle for pick-up later.

Depending on which state you live in, you will need to have your device calibrated every 30 to 180 days. These calibrations make sure your device accurately reads and records your breath alcohol concentration with every sample you provide.

Removing your ignition interlock or breathalyzer device is easy. Your installer will remove the device and will mail it back to Intoxalock for you. It's important that only your Official Intoxalock installer disconnect your ignition interlock device.

Intoxalock is by far the most difficult company to deal with. The have the worst customer service of any company I’ve ever done business with by far. The fact that you cannot even email a complaint says it all. The sailor times often exceed 1 hr. They charge you for lock outs even when the device is faulty. If you were unfortunate enough to pay extra for their towing service you’ll know it’s a scam. My device shorted out while I was driving causing sparks to come out of the unit. I had to have the car towed, and the tow truck driver actually forgot to secure my car when loading it. Yes, the car fell off the tow bed. Intoxalock took no responsibility as the service I paid for is actually contracted with someone else. After 13 month of no response I am having to take them to court. The device on my new car keeps draining the battery which puts me in lockout. I have to pay $75 for each lockout.. it’s my 3rd in 3 days and the service we tee can “inspect” my far for another week. Total BS. RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN FROM THIS COMPANY!!!!! YOU WILL RERGRET DOUNF BUSINESS WIRH THEM. They also bill bi-weekly, making your total payments much more expensive.

Frequently Asked Questions About Intoxalock Ignition Interlock

How does an interlock device work?

An ignition interlock device (IID) is a small breathalyzer installed in your vehicle to prevent it from starting if alcohol is detected on your breath. Before driving, you'll blow into the device. If your breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) is below the programmed limit, the car starts. Periodic retests occur during your trip to ensure continued compliance. To read more on Intoxalock, you can read our ignition interlock device guide.

What is the cost of an ignition interlock device?

The installation of an ignition interlock device, often called a car breathalyzer, typically costs between $70 and $150. This one-time fee is paid at the start of your lease and covers the service center's labor to install the device in your vehicle. Payment is made directly to the service center at the time of installation. For more on cost breakdowns, you can read our cost of ignition interlock device guide.
