Pickup had unnecessary hassles, but drop-off was fantastic!
Because I made the reservation before I signed up for the Emerald club, I still had to go to the counter first--and I had no problems there. The person in the lot, however, could not find my reservation. Finally I got a car, but the person at the gate could not find my reservation in the system either, even will all the documentation in hand. Finally he found it with my Emerald club number. It seems they just have some communications problems in their record system.
Dropoff could not have been easier. I pulled the car in, handed off the key, and got on a shuttle.

I’m leaving a 2‑star review for National Car Rental at Denver International Airport because my experience ended up being a mix of good and frustrating moments. The pickup process itself was smooth, and the staff at the counter were polite. I got my vehicle quickly, and everything seemed fine at first.
However, once I started driving, I realized the air conditioner wasn’t working at the best.. In Denver’s summer heat, that’s not a small issue. With temps in 90s and low hundreds and two young kids, I called them back and asked about getting a replacement vehicle, hoping it would be a simple swap. Instead, I couldn’t get a clear answer from anyone. No one seemed willing to take ownership of the problem, and I was left standing there without any real guidance. A "Mike" from their location kept asking us to call the customer service when he was sitting right there at the location.
I tried asking again, explaining that the AC was completely non‑functional, but the responses were vague and unhelpful. It felt like the staff didn’t want to deal with the situation, and I ended up wasting time without getting any resolution. For a major airport location, I expected more urgency and better customer support.
Thankfully, after multiple frustrating hours and calls, I was asked to go to the nearest Enterprise location. Enterprise Denver stepped in and helped me out right away. They listened, understood the issue, and got me into a working vehicle without any hassle. Their professionalism really stood out, especially compared to the lack of assistance I received at National.
National wasn’t terrible overall, but when the car had a serious issue, they didn’t provide the help I needed. That’s why this experience lands at 2 stars—some positives, but a major customer service gap when it mattered most.

As an Emerald Club member who has rented from this National location multiple times, I expect a smooth, professional experience that matches the premium price. Today that did not happen.
At the exit checkout lane (where you drive up with the car), the employee GARFIELD was rude when he told me I should have gone to the counter first and then come to the exit lane. He specifically said this was required because Im a Mexican citizen or a Romanian citizen. His tone of voice was consistently rude throughout the interaction. This was something I had never been told on previous visits as an Emerald member.
He then checked my passport. When he tried to charge my credit card, the transaction failed because he attempted to process it without letting me enter my PIN. After I pointed this out and entered the PIN myself, it went through right away. He never made me feel welcome or valued as a customer. His overall demeanor was unfriendly and dismissive; he gave me an unpleasant look and didn’t respond when I thanked him and said goodbye.
I choose National over lower-tier companies because of the higher standard of service. My experience with this employee today fell well short of that. People who treat customers this way should not work at a company like National. I hope management addresses the customer-service standards here so other Emerald members don’t have the same experience.

Long story incoming.
I came into Denver off a delayed flight this morning, landing around 10:30am from San Francisco. Sleepy, I worked until 1:00pm, and then headed over to National.
The story begins.
I walk into national and meet a lovely guy, Desi. He's immediately cheerful and friendly, but the mood sours. I don't have my driver’s license.
Confidently, I hand him my passport. He tells me I can't rent a car without a physical driver’s license. What a day, I say to myself as slip away.
Two canceled rideshares later, I run into Fred. He comes up and asks about my situation. When I tell him, he comes to my rescue - I can just order a new license and print a temp.
Then, I run into Aaron (I think?), who’s the branch manager. All around helpful and lovely guy. He directs me back to Desi, and after a little shuffling of paperwork, I'm in a brand new Honda Accord, headed out.
Aaron, next to me in the car, directs us out, and we meet Juju. Again, all around lovely person - very friendly and helpful. After a little chit chat, I'm on my way to my destination.
I want to take a second to thank 7 individuals here:
- Man by the Window (I did not catch his name), who kindly directed me to Desi
- Desi, who’s about to graduate with a degree in Marketing and a bright future ahead
- Fred, the friendly older gentlemen who sat patiently with me as I figured things out
- Juju, the attendant, who has a great smile and better sense of humor
Thank you all, so very much.
TLDR: Go Like a Pro.
He's the area manager - lovely guy all around.

For years, every time I have hired a car I have thought "there must be a way of doing this better". No more - National Car Rental has cracked it. Super friendly team at Denver (I'm looking at you, Garfield!) great range of vehicles and super efficient and speedy check-in and check-out process. This Brit not used to American-sized cars initially chose too small a vehicle for our Colorado road trip. Discovered this having driven to our hotel to pick up the family and their bags. Drove back to National to throw ourselves on their mercy - no issue, no stress, no hassle: instantly upgraded for free to a larger vehicle.
Never before I have I seriously wanted to return somewhere simply to hire a car from the same people! Don't know whether the Denver team are particularly performing above what can reasonably be expected or this is just the National way, but I'm seriously, seriously impressed and will certainly use them again. Thank you!
