Ignition interlock device installations usually take 1-2 hours at your local Official Intoxalock Location, depending on the make and model of your vehicle. You can either wait for the installation to be complete in a waiting area or can drop off your vehicle for pick-up later.

Depending on which state you live in, you will need to have your device calibrated every 30 to 180 days. These calibrations make sure your device accurately reads and records your breath alcohol concentration with every sample you provide.

Removing your ignition interlock or breathalyzer device is easy. Your installer will remove the device and will mail it back to Intoxalock for you. It's important that only your Official Intoxalock installer disconnect your ignition interlock device.

I chose this service center because it is the closest location to where I live and the calibration costs less than other service centers in the area. The guys here are friendly and give good customer service. It’s also a stereo shop and has cool decor inside. Also next to a Jack in the Box! I’ve done a vehicle switch here and also had my device calibrated a couple of times. 👍👍

Installation went smoothly, however, the device drains your battery pretty fast when you're not using the car. I parked my car for two days and went to start it but it wouldn't start because the machine drained my battery. I got a jump and it started but it drained battery once again by the time I needed to use my car again. The customer service center said I needed to by a stop drizzle device, or something like that, to help the machine not drain so much power when not in use. Basically I have no choice now but to get a jump everytime I need to start my car. I recommend buying a portable jump starter to have handy if you have this machine in your car. Ultimately I chose to uninstall this device after a few weeks of having it installed. The manager Isiah made this process a breeze and even made things right by booking me an appointment to uninstall it personally free of charge and waived all other fees associated with the uninstall.

Frequently Asked Questions About Intoxalock Ignition Interlock

How does an interlock device work?

An ignition interlock device (IID) is a small breathalyzer installed in your vehicle to prevent it from starting if alcohol is detected on your breath. Before driving, you'll blow into the device. If your breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) is below the programmed limit, the car starts. Periodic retests occur during your trip to ensure continued compliance. To read more on Intoxalock, you can read our ignition interlock device guide.

What is the cost of an ignition interlock device?

The installation of an ignition interlock device, often called a car breathalyzer, typically costs between $70 and $150. This one-time fee is paid at the start of your lease and covers the service center's labor to install the device in your vehicle. Payment is made directly to the service center at the time of installation. For more on cost breakdowns, you can read our cost of ignition interlock device guide.
