SAFETY ISSUE CONCERN.
Normally, I don't do Google reviews, and this shop has been one of my go-to's for the last three years, where I've spent roughly $10,000 on my 94 Chevy G30 campervan. They redid my entire suspension, and did a great job. They reserviced it for free when some of the parts got loose and were making noise. They would even give me a veterans discount...but it was never consistent, and it did fall into the 'sometimes' category.
However, with my brakes, it was an entirely different story, AND A SAFETY ISSUE THAT COULD HAVE COST ME MY LIFE! It is difficult for me to say, but I will no longer be spending another dollar at this shop. I've had lasting concerns with my rear drum brakes for THREE YEARS. They have serviced them multiple times, always improving them, but something was never quite right. I kept trying to explain it to them, but they treated me like I didn't know what I was talking about. However, since the problem was improving, I was willing to continue using them.
Last year I nearly died when my brakes failed coming down a mountain road. I took it back to them, and they did take care of it and improved it slightly.
I left for another long trip last week, and I was very clear about still having my concerns about my brakes, especially my safety concerns, and they knew all about the near fatal brake failure. After $2000 and redoing not only all four brakes, but basically rebuilding all four wheels (bearings, etc), I was on my way. But again, something in the rear brakes just didn't feel right.
Fast-forward to yesterday. I arrived in Portland and just didn't feel safe with the way my brakes were handling, especially since the front brakes started heating up again, just like last year when they failed coming down the mountain. I took it to a shop in Portland, and low and behold, they showed me everything that had been done wrong for the last three years. For that entire time, my rear brakes were only performing at 20-30% at best. but what they discovered about the most recent 'repairs' was truly horrifying.
One wheel had the drums put on BACKWARDS! The other was adjusted so far out of specs, it wasn't even working. AND THEY HADN'T EVEN REPLACED THE DRUMS EVEN THOUGH THEY CLAIMED THEY DID A FULL BRAKE JOB. The springs were old and not fitted correctly, one side had an integral part replaced new, but the other was still the old part, creating a severe imbalance, leaving one rear brake barely even working. Again, this was literally after I was told they had redone all four brakes.
Now, mistakes happen. I totally understand that. And I want to make completely clear that the front brakes were good, and the suspension work they did was also well done.
But the rear beak drums were a disaster, and THIS WAS A SAFETY CONCERN ABOUT MY LIFE. I told them I was going on another big mountain trip, what I was concerned about, etc. and they assured me I was good to go. If I hadn't gone to this other shop in Portland, I would never have known about the completely half-assed job they did on the rear drums, and I may well have had another brake failure.
Sadly, I can never trust Dual Tone again.
