Ignition interlock device installations usually take 1-2 hours at your local Official Intoxalock Location, depending on the make and model of your vehicle. You can either wait for the installation to be complete in a waiting area or can drop off your vehicle for pick-up later.

Depending on which state you live in, you will need to have your device calibrated every 30 to 180 days. These calibrations make sure your device accurately reads and records your breath alcohol concentration with every sample you provide.

Removing your ignition interlock or breathalyzer device is easy. Your installer will remove the device and will mail it back to Intoxalock for you. It's important that only your Official Intoxalock installer disconnect your ignition interlock device.

I realize this is not supposed to be convenient. However, the device itself is very antiquated. The mouth piece does not fit in the device and falls out easily. I have missed several "test" with the mouth piece falling out onto the floorboard, not being able to reinstall it quick enough. Secondly, it has given me several failed test because it needed me to "Blow Harder". I am a very health man, and have found that the required pressure to blow into it is unreasonably difficult. Lastly, this device is discusting, obviously I am renting it for some time frame, but there are no assurances it has been steralized prior to me receiving it. It requires you to blow for three seconds, then inhale for 2 seconds then reblow. Lastly, the time inbetween test is unreasonable as it is sometimes requires test to happen just minutes after starting the vehicle. Also, this is a dangerous device in regards to distractions from keeping focus on the road. Its 2026, there has to be a better way..

Frequently Asked Questions About Intoxalock Ignition Interlock

How does an interlock device work?

An ignition interlock device (IID) is a small breathalyzer installed in your vehicle to prevent it from starting if alcohol is detected on your breath. Before driving, you'll blow into the device. If your breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) is below the programmed limit, the car starts. Periodic retests occur during your trip to ensure continued compliance. To read more on Intoxalock, you can read our ignition interlock device guide.

What is the cost of an ignition interlock device?

The installation of an ignition interlock device, often called a car breathalyzer, typically costs between $70 and $150. This one-time fee is paid at the start of your lease and covers the service center's labor to install the device in your vehicle. Payment is made directly to the service center at the time of installation. For more on cost breakdowns, you can read our cost of ignition interlock device guide.
