I had one of the most embarrassing and frustrating customer service experiences of my life at this location. I have rented cars extensively throughout California, across the U.S., and internationally, and I have never experienced anything this disorganized or unprofessional.
I arrived on a delayed flight after the airline had also lost my luggage, so I was already exhausted and stressed. When I arrived to pick up my rental car, I provided all of the requested documentation. I was then told that, because I had an international driver’s license, I also needed to present my passport. Unfortunately, my passport was inside my other luggage.
Because I was traveling with elderly family members, including a 90-year-old family member, they had already taken our belongings and gone home while I stayed behind to collect the rental car. I then had to ask them to make the trip back to bring me my passport. Given the circumstances, this was extremely stressful and completely unnecessary had the requirements been communicated to me upfront.
When my family returned with my passport, I thought everything was finally resolved. The representative then processed a deposit on my debit card. Only after taking the deposit did they tell me that it was not a credit card and that I needed to provide a credit card. Of course, I did not have one with me, given the circumstances surrounding my delayed flight and lost luggage.
At that point, I tried to find a solution. I asked whether the reservation could be transferred to another family member who had a credit card. I was told that this was not possible. After considerable back-and-forth, I was then told that a debit card could actually be accepted, provided I showed my return flight information.
I then provided the flight information, only to then be told that the rental did not qualify because my reservation did not align with their requirements . This was particularly frustrating because I have rented cars throughout California and around the world using debit cards and international license have never encountered this level of confusion regarding the requirements.
Throughout the entire process, I repeatedly tried to find a solution, but I was given conflicting information at nearly every step. Ultimately, I was forced to cancel the reservation myself and was charged a substantial cancellation fee, despite having spent a significant amount of time trying to resolve an issue that could have been avoided if the requirements had simply been explained clearly from the beginning. I ultimately left without a rental car.
What made this experience especially unacceptable was that the staff could have easily explained all of the requirements before processing anything. Alternatively, if the reservation couldn’t be saved, they could have told me immediately rather than having my elderly family members make multiple unnecessary trips and putting everyone through considerable stress.
As a frequent traveler, I have dealt with rental agencies all over the world and have encountered many unusual situations. In my experience, other rental companies have generally been willing to help by modifying reservations, changing the renter when appropriate, helping with cancellations, or finding another workable solution. None of those options were meaningfully offered here.
I was also extremely concerned by the apparent lack of training. At one point, the representative struggled with basic address and ZIP code information, which further undermined my confidence that the situation was being handled competently. I was repeatedly told that a manager was being contacted, but the manager was apparently unavailable, and no effective resolution was provided.
This was not simply an inconvenience. It involved unnecessary stress, wasted time, additional travel for my elderly family members, a cancellation fee, overcharging my card and ultimately being left without transportation.
I strongly recommend going to another rental agency if you have the option. If anyway possible , please avoid this location.
