  National customer service is uniformly PHENOMENAL across the country! I can confidently confirm that I made the best decision to switch to National. Just when I think the employees couldn't get more accommodating and kinder, each airport National staff proves me wrong! Whatever y'all are doing to train and keep your employees happy is working because they are always so effortlessly sweet! The automatic Emerald aisle and easy to obtain Executive aisle are amazing perks as well and take all the stress away from renting a car in new cities. Thank you to the El Paso desk agent that made my first experience with National become my new travel hack and the easiest part of my commute!

  I made a reservation online through National’s website to rent a vehicle from Fresno, CA, so I could drive to my next duty station near Sacramento. When I arrived at the Fresno airport, the employee assisting me (I believe his name was Jordan) asked for my reservation and driver’s license. I explained that I’m active duty military and that while the expiration date on my California driver’s license had passed, California law extends the validity of an active duty service member’s driver’s license while they remain on active duty. I also provided my military ID, a copy of the applicable California law, and my current military orders. Despite all of this, I was told that my “expired license” didn’t matter and that they would not honor it. I politely asked if a manager could assist because I assumed it was simply a misunderstanding of the law. After speaking with a manager by phone, the employee came back and told me they still would not rent me the vehicle. Since I’m currently stationed overseas and don’t have regular access to a U.S. phone, I asked if I could briefly use their phone to contact National’s customer service. That request was also denied, and I was simply told to “figure it out” on my own. I walked over to the Hertz counter in the same terminal with the exact same documentation. They immediately recognized the California military driver’s license extension, processed my rental without hesitation, and had me on the road in minutes. The issue wasn’t that National was being cautious, it was the complete unwillingness to understand or verify California law, combined with the lack of professionalism and customer service shown throughout the interaction. As an active duty service member, this experience was extremely disappointing. I hope National provides better training regarding military driver’s license extensions and treats future military customers with more respect. Until then, I cannot recommend this location, especially to fellow service members.
