Ignition interlock device installations usually take 1-2 hours at your local Official Intoxalock Location, depending on the make and model of your vehicle. You can either wait for the installation to be complete in a waiting area or can drop off your vehicle for pick-up later.

Depending on which state you live in, you will need to have your device calibrated every 30 to 180 days. These calibrations make sure your device accurately reads and records your breath alcohol concentration with every sample you provide.

Removing your ignition interlock or breathalyzer device is easy. Your installer will remove the device and will mail it back to Intoxalock for you. It's important that only your Official Intoxalock installer disconnect your ignition interlock device.

Be careful, before doing business with a man named Mark and don't pay anything until you've clearly heard every detail and cost exactly. 1st $30 is just to set up I paid not knowing they were gonna charge $120 a month + $300 install, $58+ every 2 weeks and to install it costs $250-$300. I paid all upfront, and still had a fee on my balance when activating my account. They don't tell you pricing until the last minute. I was mad the guy was hiding fees and not upfront after paying the $30 set up fee, I was even more upset the guy said it was $58+ bi weekly payments that's twice the price when it's suppose to be +$2 a day. And when I told him I won't play his hiding fee games to refund my money back into my account, and I'll find someone who's honest, he was being argumentative about every other company I'll have these same issues with pricing fees and because he had set up everything I might as well comply with what he says and follow through. Gave the phone to my son before I got out of character even worse than I had at that point.

Frequently Asked Questions About Intoxalock Ignition Interlock

How does an interlock device work?

An ignition interlock device (IID) is a small breathalyzer installed in your vehicle to prevent it from starting if alcohol is detected on your breath. Before driving, you'll blow into the device. If your breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) is below the programmed limit, the car starts. Periodic retests occur during your trip to ensure continued compliance. To read more on Intoxalock, you can read our ignition interlock device guide.

What is the cost of an ignition interlock device?

The installation of an ignition interlock device, often called a car breathalyzer, typically costs between $70 and $150. This one-time fee is paid at the start of your lease and covers the service center's labor to install the device in your vehicle. Payment is made directly to the service center at the time of installation. For more on cost breakdowns, you can read our cost of ignition interlock device guide.
