I brought my International 4300 to Holt International in Wichita Falls, TX for service due to loss of power and white exhaust smoke. A diagnostic confirmed injector failure, so a full injector service was performed. During the process, a poor compression test led them to advise either an engine overhaul or a valve adjustment. I chose the less expensive valve adjustment, which improved compression significantly, and the truck was cleared for service. I was never warned that this repair carried a risk of imminent failure — I was led to believe it was safe. The Service Advisor then told me the duty cycle for my Maxxforce DT466E engine was “5,000 hours” and that this meant the truck was “at the end of its service life.” This is false. The DT466E Maxxforce is rated for 550,000 miles or 15,000–20,000 hours. My truck had 147,000 miles and 5,000 hours — only about 25–33% of its expected life. The invoice for their work totaled $6,962.55. On May 9, I left Wichita Falls for Oklahoma City. Within hours, the engine lost power, made unusual sounds, and produced heavy white smoke. The next day, catastrophic engine failure occurred — just three hours of run time after leaving Holt. A properly maintained DT466E should not fail under these conditions. The timeline points directly to negligence in Wichita Falls’ service work, particularly the valve adjustment. Offering this as a viable alternative to a rebuild, only for the engine to fail almost immediately, shows poor judgment and no accountability. In my experience, this branch demonstrated dishonesty, poor mechanical judgment, and negligence — resulting in an avoidable, costly breakdown. I will never return and urge others to get a second opinion before agreeing to major work.
