1) I booked a rental online for a mid-size suv. Nissan Rouge or similar model. What they don’t tell you is they only have cheap Hyundais or the more expensive full-size or luxury suv so you really won’t get the equipment you expect.
2) I checked in, and was informed I was getting alternative equipment, a Hyundai Tucson. I’m not brand specific, this didn’t bother me, I just wanted a reliable suv to drive to Colorado and spread my father’s ashes where he wished. I told the representative that checked me in I would be driving the vehicle from Universal City, to Dallas, then to Denver, and into Aspen from there. Making them fully aware of the miles and road I intended to cover during my week long rental.
3) The Hyundai - before driving it off their lot I noticed the tires were likely original equipment, with 33,000 miles on the vehicle I was concerned about the tread, but not enough to reject the rental. I also noticed the oil life was at 50%. Again not something I can reasonably reject the vehicle for, and my position was, they know where I’m driving and how many miles I intend on driving so if this vehicle is ready for that, they should know.
4) Driving to Dallas - I encountered a few scattered showers, no big deal, except the wipers on this Hyundai were terrible, it was easier to see when I didn’t use them! Not something you notice on a new model rental until you’re in need of reliable equipment. This was still day 1 of my rental. I received a text that evening from Enterprise that I could correspond with the rental team via text during my lease for concerns regarding this rental. I text that evening that the wipers were bad, and I figured worst case I could replace them if I had to. They never responded to this concern.
5) Day 2 of my week rental and I am driving from Dallas to Denver. My stepmom is flying into Denver the next morning, so I am on a set schedule and cannot delay for wiper blades. I drive from Dallas to Amarillo, making abt an hour rest stop in Amarillo. From there I continued my drive to Colorado. As I make my way into Colorado, down the Raton Pass, I begin to experience unusual vibrations from the brakes. There were two occupants in the vehicle and minimal luggage so this was a concern. I text that evening how unhappy I was with this rental. I had to drive most the day and had unreliable service, calling during business hours to complain didn’t seem like a useful thing to do, I wanted to focus on what my trip was about, losing my dad. This text explained the concern with the wipers, tires, oil life, and now brakes. Yet again no response. I didn’t receive a response from this team until 5 days into my rental.
6) This was day 3 of my rental, I drove from Colorado Springs to Denver Airport to pick up my stepmom and her sister, from there we made our way into the mountains via the interstate, our destination was Leadville, Co. The vehicle was operating fine, there wasn’t regular operating issues that caused any concern up to this point, just the few maintenance concerns. However, once we began our descent from the mountain pass the brake issue became a major problem. This vehicle shook my family the entire way down the pass, going well under the speed limit.
7) I text again that evening once we arrived safely in Leadville, but like I stated above, I never heard from them until 5 days into my 7 day rental. I was unable to drive this rental up the independence pass to Aspen, where my dad wanted his ashes spread. And I had to take an extra day driving it carefully out of the mountains. There was not an enterprise anywhere on my route I could safely drive to from Leadville, so I extended my rental 1 day and took my time getting it back to Texas.
Enterprise lost a customer for life in me and my entire family from this single experience, if you rent from them, do a full safety check on the vehicle, do not trust them!
