AutoZone Corporate Customer Relations AutoZone, Inc. 123 South Front Street Memphis, TN 38103 Subject: Formal Complaint – Misrepresentation of Company Policy and Unprofessional Customer Treatment Store #01473 – Spring, Texas To Whom It May Concern, I am submitting this letter as a formal complaint regarding an unacceptable customer service incident that occurred on March 16, 2026 at AutoZone Store #01473 located at 18615 Kuykendahl Rd., Spring, Texas. At approximately 7:48 AM, I visited the store to purchase a replacement battery after my vehicle battery had failed. As a long-time AutoZone customer and rewards member, I am well aware that AutoZone publicly advertises complimentary battery installation with purchase for most vehicles, provided installation can be performed safely. During my transaction, the employee operating Register #08, under the supervision of Store Manager Preston, informed me that he would refuse to install the battery unless I purchased a “Battery Install Kit” priced at $3.49. I informed the employee that I had previously had batteries installed by AutoZone on several occasions and had never been required to purchase an installation kit as a condition of receiving the installation service. I specifically asked the employee whether purchasing the kit was AutoZone company policy, and I was told that it was required in order for the installation to be performed. Based on that representation, I reluctantly agreed to purchase the item. However, once the transaction was completed and I reviewed the receipt, it became clear that the explanation given to me was misleading. The employee then attempted to justify the charge by offering a $21 discount, suggesting that the purchase of the installation kit was necessary. After reviewing the numbers on the receipt, I determined that the discount did not change the fact that I had been pressured into purchasing a product that was not required. I therefore requested that the Battery Install Kit be refunded, as I did not want the item and did not believe it was legitimately required by company policy. Initially, the employee refused to issue the refund and stated he would not remove the charge. After a lengthy and uncomfortable discussion, the item was eventually refunded, which is documented on the attached receipt. While the dollar amount involved may seem small, the issue is far more significant. The core concerns are: • Misrepresentation of AutoZone policy • Pressure to purchase an unnecessary add-on product • Refusal to initially correct the transaction • Unprofessional customer service conduct According to AutoZone’s publicly stated service offering, AutoZone provides complimentary battery installation with purchase for most vehicles when installation can be performed safely. At no point does the policy indicate that customers are required to purchase a battery installation kit in order to receive this service. Presenting the purchase of an installation kit as mandatory appears to be a direct misrepresentation of company policy and places customers in a position where they may feel pressured into purchasing items they do not need.
