I purchased a Toyota 4Runner about a month ago, and immediately after buying it, the brakes had issues. At the time of purchase, the salesperson told me, “Just buy it, our service department will take care of it.”
Well, it’s been a month now, and the problem is still not fixed. I’ve already brought the vehicle in twice. Every time I call the service department, they tell me they are “waiting for an engineer” because they don’t know how to fix it. So what exactly am I supposed to do—keep driving a vehicle with faulty brakes and hope I stay alive until an engineer shows up?
That’s completely unacceptable and extremely unsafe.
On top of that, the financial side is even more concerning. The vehicle price was initially $51,000, but after adding various fees, it somehow went up to over $72,000. Now I’m being told my balance is close to $76,000. What is going on?
I tried calling the finance department to get answers, and they told me they “don’t have my file.” So what does that mean—do I not owe anything? Or is your system just completely disorganized?
I was transferred from one department to another, and in the end, someone hung up on me. No resolution, no explanation, no accountability.
This is one of the worst customer service experiences I’ve ever had. Completely unprofessional and irresponsible.
If I could give a worse rating, I would.
Let’s start with this dealerships sales reps. She gave us a handshake and that’s the only time i think we saw her. The guy that just hypes up the cars and didn’t take credit for our sale was very nice, jorge.
We went in one evening looking for a truck in particular, we saw it, test drove it and sat down to do the numbers. Manager comes in does “the numbers” and adds every possible add-on. We tell him dont add anything. He says “we cant take it off” we insist one more time and he says we’ll see what we can do. Suspicious. We agree on a payment plan and manager berates us for not trading in our vehicle at a different location, with better price. We decide to continue despite this in good faith of Jorge. Manager goes back to office, never gave us a full price, additional equipment or even a ballpark of what we were looking at. Starts running credits with banks ignores Toyota, which would seem like the first options seeing as this is a Toyota?? Then proceeds to run it 8 times. I haven’t even heard of a few of the banks he decided to run it through. Jorge comes back request more for down payment, we say okay, under the guise of it not even much additional cost to the vehicle cost, ~54k. Since we only requested bumper to bumper and gap, expected an additional 2.5k maybe and taxes of course. Jorge comes out said we were approved, it is now 8/9pm and we have work in the morning and an hour out. We come back the next day in the evening one more time. Keep in mind we still don’t know the full price but its financed already. We go to finance the next day at around 7pm, we sit down and they butter us up and then tell me where to sign. No additional information for me to read before hand, they just scroll down the tablet, I tried scrolling up and nothing was available for me to view. Finance rep just give brief over view “ this is gap”, “This is for bumper to bumper”, “This is for warranty” , etc. Never really gives us a full number and then he did briefly mention the painting protection add-on, As previously mentioned, we did not want it. I request the removal of it, sales rep states that its already financed nothing he can do about it.???? We never wanted it in the first place but now it makes sense why we didn’t get to see what they were submitting the day before. We ask for the price, rep said he’ll get us a copy of it all after we sign… its already late we were expecting to be able to see what we were signing but everyone’s tired especially us after a work day and long ride given by a friend to pick up said truck. they had already ran our credits so much that it was gonna be difficult to go look at other vehicles. No backing out then and they had taken the 5k, the return was gonna be even more difficult. We sign, we leave, we read paperwork 2 days later during the weekend.
That extended warranty we never requested, 10k…. For something that doesn’t even cover maintenance. It didn’t even included the bumper to bumper or the gap in this price, it covered seats, windows wheels, “full Coverage” , we never requested it, we just wanted the protection of motor failure. Which i have been told at another Toyota, that Toyota itself can give that warranty for a much smaller price, which just means that they have decided to go with the third party to gouge every single penny they could out of us.The paint protection we never wanted, 2.5k, I couldn’t even use it at whatever Toyota I wanted, they decided to only go to another shottenkirk. I didn’t end up using it cause as I mentioned before… I NEVER REQUESTED IT... I hope the manager who did this doesn’t sleep well at night, since he could just layer everything on us without guilt. Over all this dealership experience has not been a very pleasant time, I do not recommend and i do hope that they realize that their practices are not very morally sound.
I am posting this on my wife's account, as i do not have a google account on my computer.

If i Could leave a 0 I would, this was by far the worst car buying experience in my 53 years. I reached out last week on a Toyota Tacoma my son was interested in at Shottenkirks San Antonio Dealership. Now we live 3 and 4 hours from the dealership, so I informed the internet contact we would not be able to come see the truck until Saturday morning. I offered to put a deposit down of 500 or 1,000 dollars just to show we were serious and planned to come see the truck. We were already pre-approved from our bank so once he saw the truck and test drove it, we would share the approval code to finalize the deal. Well by the end of last week they had sold the truck he was looking at. No big deal, it happens. Well as luck would have it they listed another Tacoma Limited that my son wanted to go look at, again I contacted Bianca and informed her we found another vehicle and wanted to drive down and check it out, now I asked for the buyers order for this truck to send to the bank and get everything lined up. She proceeded to tell me they don't send buyers orders over email or text, they only present them in person, again, i am 4 hours away, so not close enough to make it easy for me to swing by. But after several back and forth and one excuse after the next on why they only present buyers orders in person, I planned a trip to drive there on Saturday morning. I texted with Bianca every day to confirm the truck was still available and she confirmed no one had made any inquiries. She even texted my Friday night to tell me the truck was still available, and she had my appt set up for Saturday at 10. Saturday morning I texted her at 7 and informed her I was in route; she replied to me that the truck we were interested in was pulled up to the front and ready for us when we got there. I arrived at 10:15 and asked for Bianca, as she was the only person I had been dealing with, but come to find out she handles the internet inquiries and is not in sales, so she set me up with Sean. Sean took us out to the truck, showed us the truck, all the features and then we took it for a test drive. My son decided he liked the truck after the test drive, and as we are walking back into the dealership, Sean mentions the gentleman sitting at the table across from us, had also taken the truck for a test drive and is working with the finance dept to buy the truck. I was confused, because I had been in communication with the dealership for a week and had asked them to put a note in the system that I was driving 4 HOURS Saturday morning, along with my son Driving 3 HOURS to test drive and look at the truck. That being said I was told they don't put notes or holds on any vehicles, it's just first come first serve. So, i gave them the approval code from my bank and when the finance manager comes back with the buyer's order, he's added on about 5 grand of BS add Ons. I told him we didn't need the add Ons and he proceeds to tell me all used vehicles automatically get add Ons, ceramic coating and other BS that we know is just BS to jack up the price, so they make more commission. My son asks why we would need add Ons we won't use and don't need, to which the liar finance person says he will go talk to his manager to see if he can lower the BS Price add Ons. Comes back in less than a minute and says his manager said he's not going to lower the VIP Add Ons, but it's not an issue cause the other guy bought the truck anyway.
So, 8 hours driving to a snake oil completely lying and useless finance dept, and not one hint of an apology, like they couldn't have cared less about our time or our business.
Avoid this dealership at all costs, especially if you are out of town, they will lie to you repeatedly to get you in the door and then the finance dept will act like an all powerful jerk.
Amazing Experience at Shottenkirk Toyota San Antonio
I had a great experience working with Alan Fernandez at Shottenkirk Toyota San Antonio. From the very beginning, when I first called, Alan was friendly, professional, and really easy to talk to. He asked about my schedule and worked around my availability, which I appreciated.
When I arrived, everything moved quickly—we were able to see the 4Runner in less than an hour, and I honestly fell in love with the truck right away.
Even though the paperwork took about 3–4 hours, it was understandable since they were busy that day. Throughout the entire process, Alan never made me feel rushed or pressured. He gave me the time I needed to think things through and even showed me different options to make sure I was making the right decision.
In the end, I went with my first choice, and I’m really happy I did. Alan made the whole experience smooth and comfortable.
If you’re looking for a great salesperson who is patient, honest, and truly helpful, I highly recommend asking for Alan Fernandez!
I would highly recommend Shottenkirk Toyota to anyone in the market for a vehicle. From the moment we walked in, we felt genuinely welcomed and appreciated. The entire team was friendly, attentive, and made us feel comfortable right away—it truly felt like a place we could trust to do business with.
We worked with Daniel and Michael, and they were both outstanding. They took the time to show us multiple vehicles, answered all of our questions, and made sure we understood all of our options. They were patient, knowledgeable, and never once made us feel rushed or pressured into making a decision.
Even though we ultimately did not purchase a vehicle from them, that had nothing to do with their effort or service. They worked hard to try and make a deal happen and were completely transparent about their limits. They truly did everything they could, and we appreciated their honesty.
What really stood out was the no-pressure environment. At no point did we feel pushed into a deal or rushed into anything. They were very understanding and respectful throughout the entire process. Unlike many dealerships, they did not try to hold our vehicle or use any pressure tactics, which made the experience even better.
On top of that, their customer service didn’t stop when we left. They followed up the next day—and even the day after that—to check in and see if there was anything more they could do to help. That level of care really stood out to us.
Overall, even without purchasing, this was one of the best dealership experiences we’ve had. If you’re looking for a place that treats you with respect, is upfront, and genuinely tries to help, I would absolutely recommend Shottenkirk Toyota.
