With my many years as a business owner, I understand the concept of upselling. Iâve also been instilled with a highly important trait called integrity throughout my life, including my years of military experience. I bring these 2 things up because the experience I had at this location shows the workers I encountered doesnât quite grasp the meanings. I proceeded to checkout an item and just as all my purchases with Autozone I am anticipating the upsell of an item. The worker asked and I politely declined. Afterwards, the worker still decides to add this item to my purchase. Now I again say to him I dont want it, nor need the upsell item. Jokingly I asked him, âWhy would you scan that even after I just said I didnât want it?â. Mind you before this point I can admit the individual was welcoming and polite. But it all took a turn after his attempt to add an item to my purchase. He completely started to ignore me. Not even acknowledging that I was standing in front of him, speaking to him. He called another worker over to add the military discount to my purchase and after that he begin to talk over me. Like I am literally speaking with him and he is just looking at the computer screen repeating my total. Up to this point the conversation was just between this individual and myself. But afterwards I asked the other guy, âwho is the manager?â and he replied that he and another guy were. So I explained the situation and expressed how I felt it is wrong if this is how they are conducting business because adding an item to a customerâs purchase without their approval is practically stealing from that customer if the purchase is completed and the customer was not aware of the additional item being added. If I would have turned my head for any reason I wouldâve been charged for more than I was expecting to pay for. I can only imagine how many customers they have successfully done this to. Im not speaking about a customer that agrees to an upsell. Im ONLY speaking of the possible customers that have an item scanned without them noticing a worker adding it to their purchase. I agree, customers should pay close attention but sometimes distractions happens. It is practically stealing and wrong in every way to add anything to a customerâs transaction without their okay. Anyway, this particular managerâs response, âIf I donât like it I can go to another autozoneâ shows the lack of care and that this type of behavior is being accepted within this establishment. Now and only now have I became upset. I gave him a piece of my mind and I stand firm with everything I relayed to all available ears of said incident. I paid for my item and left. After leaving I called this Autozone to hopefully speak with the other manager. I was hung up on 2 times after asking for a manager. The 3rd time I called another individual answered the phone and presented himself as the other manager that had witnessed the incident. Over a recorded conversation, that the said manager acknowledged, this individual tries to also pretend like this was just a normal upsell. I furthermore explained to him why it was not and that I frequent this and other Autozone locations in the area so I am very familiar with their practices of upselling. Not only their practices but I am a business owner myself that highly encourages upsell offers. But this was not a simple upsell offer. It was an attempt to steal from a customer. No other way to put it. This all could have been avoided if 1) he never tried to add an item to my purchase I had already declined or 2) he had the decency to apologize of his wrongdoing. He could have even lied and act as if he thought I agreed to the upsell. But he chose neither. I feel if one cant appropriately interact with customers he/she should be in the back avoiding that interaction. But in this case, one can only conclude that this is a ânormalâ practice when these said individuals are on the clock together. Buyers just beware. There seems to be a few individuals at this location that are chasing their targeted sale numbers by any means necessary.
