  Used National at Houston Bush Airport during a busy weekend. While the cheaper rental agencies had long wait lines, I had none. The car was new and clean. The agents were professional, nice and accommodating. It is worth paying a bit more for consistently awesome service.

  The vehicle we had didn’t make it 10 miles before it broke down. We called the emergency number only to have it ring and ring. We did receive a call back and from there the local manager took care of everything. Quickly brought out a replacement vehicle and we were back on the road. The service was 4 star, the overall experience was two.

  My experience with National on this trip was very good. The only real snag was a ridiculously long line waiting for the shuttle bus form the terminal to the offsite location for all of the rental agencies. Well over 100 people. We opted not to wait in line and took a cab, but even from there, it was a challenge to get to the National Counter. But once I did, it was a very simple process as an Emerald Club member. The car I chose was clean, well maintained, and exiting the facility was simple and quick. Sadly, no rental company leaves the manual in the glovebox anymore, so figuring out many of the control on the touch screen was a chore.

  I do try to use National any time I travel for work of pleasure. They get it right 95% of the time, but you gotta be careful. They will sneak refueling charges on your bill. I always get the email, but now I'm going to switch to paper so I can dispute it right away. I always fill up the tank and they've charged me twice for refueling. It was no more than $10 each time, but my company shouldn't have to pay that.

  I had a reservation here but they don't allow you to communicate with the location, I had an issue and all I could get was their call center in the Philippines. The CSR that I dealt with could barely understand and kept asking for the same information over and over. She finally did understand "just cancel the reservation" and that's where I left it. Hertz worked out just fine. I've been renting from National for many years, but no more. What used to be great service has turned into just another corporate rental car company that outsources everything they can and provides the least they can for the most money.
