I had a very disappointing experience with the Enterprise Rent-A-Car location on Charleston Highway in West Columbia, SC. The manager, Clark, was extremely unprofessional, dismissive, and unhelpful.
I am a repeat customer and have rented from this location several times before. I made a reservation days in advance for a March 12 pickup at 12 PM. That same day there was tornado weather, so I arrived slightly earlier hoping to secure the vehicle before conditions worsened. When I arrived, the desk representative informed me that the vehicle had not yet been returned from the previous rental and suggested 5:30 PM as a better pickup time.
Because I work on the opposite side of town and the location closes at 6 PM, I later called to request modifying my reservation to an early pickup the next morning. When Clark answered the phone, he was rude and dismissive. Instead of trying to help, he said the car would simply be offered to another customer and told me I should rent from the airport instead.
I explained that my reservation was originally scheduled earlier in the day and that the vehicle wasn’t available when I arrived. I also mentioned that I am a frequent customer at this location and that the airport requires a different deposit, which made that option difficult. I also shared that I urgently needed the vehicle to attend a family member’s funeral, hoping for some understanding.
Instead, Clark made excuses, stating they didn’t have the car type I requested anyway, and rushed me into cancelling the reservation rather than attempting to help or modify the pickup time for the next morning.
After the call ended, I called back and asked to speak with a manager, only to learn Clark himself was the manager. He placed me on hold for 11 minutes and never returned to the call, making it clear he had no intention of resolving the issue. I eventually had to hang up.
My coworker witnessed the entire conversation on speaker, and we both agreed that the way Clark handled the situation was extremely unprofessional and unacceptable.
As a loyal repeat customer, this experience was frustrating and disappointing. Because of this interaction, I will not be returning to this location again. Clark’s behavior reflects poorly on the business and the level of customer service expected from Enterprise.
Update:
I was later informed by another Enterprise Rent‑A‑Car employee that many local locations currently have no vehicles available due to the high demand from Spring Break travel and events taking place at the nearby military base. Because of this, I was told my reservation would likely not have been honored anyway due to the lack of inventory.
However, this information should have been clearly communicated to me by the location manager, Clark. Instead, he was unprofessional, dismissive, and unwilling to properly address the situation. As a repeat customer who has rented from this location multiple times, I expected transparency and respectful customer service.
Due to the inconvenience, lack of communication, and the way I was treated, I believe an apology is warranted. I would also appreciate consideration for a future discount or credit to restore my confidence in Enterprise Rent‑A‑Car and its commitment to customer satisfaction.
