I don’t know if this has to anyone else but my experience since I’ve put this in my car has been incredibly anxiety ridden, frustrating, and impossible. From the box itself to the customer service end to the app. Not just talking about the out Regis fees to put this in this whole company is a scam!!!!! I put this in my car 2 days ago and when I did the demo everything went fine so I thought I knew how to blow into the box. So now I’m driving and I have to blow again and it didn’t blow correctly. It kept saying blow harder while I’m driving on the highway. My anxiety when this beeping goes off and then not being able to blow harder Or blow correctly into the box while you’re driving on the highway While watching the time clock go down, not knowing what that means thinking I’m gonna get locked out. Eventually, after half an hour of trying, that’s exactly what it did lock me out. Then I call them to tell me that I got locked out due to me blowing an alcohol level. Which was completely not true it was because I couldn’t blow hard enough. Now I owe them $75 and I have to go get it unlocked for another $50. The thing showed 000 that is not true they lie, and when you confront them with it, I got hung up by customer service twice. They tell me to download the app I cannot It won’t let me in after I’ve put my ID code in my password. Trying to make a profile it’s ridiculous. This company is all it is is a racket for money. If I had blown and alcohol level, then I would understand me paying the fine, but it locked me out for not blowing hard enough. And then I can’t argue the situation. They’re lying they’re just here to take your money and screw your life. I had one bad night that was it and now it’s costing me $10,000. I don’t even drink. I don’t know if any other companies do this, but I would not go with this company. And if I don’t get my $75 back, I’m taking this thing out of the car and going with another company. I will not be accused of something that did not happen and pay fines that I do not have to pay. I already have enough fines that I’m paying for something that I did do.
Frequently Asked Questions About Intoxalock Ignition Interlock
How does an interlock device work?
An ignition interlock device (IID) is a small breathalyzer installed in your vehicle to prevent it from starting if alcohol is detected on your breath. Before driving, you'll blow into the device. If your breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) is below the programmed limit, the car starts. Periodic retests occur during your trip to ensure continued compliance. To read more on Intoxalock, you can read our ignition interlock device guide.
What is the cost of an ignition interlock device?
The installation of an ignition interlock device, often called a car breathalyzer, typically costs between $70 and $150. This one-time fee is paid at the start of your lease and covers the service center's labor to install the device in your vehicle. Payment is made directly to the service center at the time of installation. For more on cost breakdowns, you can read our cost of ignition interlock device guide.
How do I use my interlock device?
Using an IID is simple. To start your vehicle, blow into the device as directed. If the device detects no alcohol, your car will start. You may be prompted for "rolling retests" while driving, where you’ll blow into the device again to confirm compliance. How-to videos are also available on the Intoxalock mobile app.
Where do I get an ignition interlock device?
Ignition interlock devices can be installed at certified service centers nationwide. Intoxalock offers a convenient network of locations and helps you schedule an installation appointment near you. Visit our Intoxalock locations page or call us to find the nearest service center and begin the installation process.
How long will my installation take?
Installing an ignition interlock device typically takes 1-2 hours, depending on your vehicle type. Certified technicians ensure the device is properly installed and provide you with training on how to use it. Contact Intoxalock for an appointment and an accurate time estimate for your installation.
What happens if I fail a breath test on my ignition interlock device?
If you fail a breath test, your vehicle will not start, and the device will log the event. Depending on your state’s regulations, multiple failed tests may trigger additional penalties, such as lockouts or reporting to your monitoring authority. Intoxalock devices allow you to retest after a short wait if alcohol is no longer detected. Always follow your state’s guidelines to remain compliant.
Can I install an ignition interlock device in a vehicle I don’t own?
Yes, in most cases, you can install an ignition interlock device in a vehicle you regularly drive, even if you’re not the registered owner. However, the vehicle owner must provide consent for the installation. Intoxalock works with you and the owner to ensure compliance with state regulations and the successful setup of the device.
What should I do if my ignition interlock device locks me out?
If your ignition interlock device locks you out, it’s usually due to missed tests, failed tests, or state-specific requirements. Intoxalock offers a simple lockout override process in most cases to help you get back on the road quickly. Contact Intoxalock customer support for assistance and to understand the steps needed to resolve the issue.
