Shop assistant Joseph helped me figure out how to get the correct gaps on my spark plugs and offered to change them for me infront of the shop unprompted! Took him ten minutes what I was planning to take 3hrs to do with my limited experience. He walked me through the process as well so I can change them next time! Ive been anxious about this for weeks but determined to DIY it after bad experiences with mechanics and cant thank him and Advance Auto enough for really supporting the community and helping make budgets stretch in a time when paying for car maintenance and repairs is hard for most people! Brakes work by using friction to turn kinetic energy into heat. There are two designs: drum brakes (older), and disc brakes (newer). Both use hydraulic pressure to move a piston outward. In disc brakes, the piston is located inside a caliper that houses brake pads and fits over the rotor. The friction lining on the pads makes contact with the rotor to slow the vehicle. In drum brakes, the piston moves two curved shoes lined with friction material against the inside of the brake drum.
