There are other better choices if you need a IID. Intoxilock makes you go through a extensive phone tree every time you call. It reads you your account balance and next payment every time you call. When you do finally get someone on the phone, they are from a call center in another country and you cant understand them. They nickel and dime you every chance they get. $3 data fee to get calibration, or get your equipment fixed when it fails which is does often. The blow, suck, blow pattern is rediculously hard to get right. You will get unaccepted samples, or false positives often which could jeopardize your future. The equipment itself is old and out dated and requires multiple wires to be strung all across your dash, center console, and drives door jam. The camera is on ALL THE TIME even though they tell you different. You better drive your car for 15 minutes every 3 days or your battery will die. When it does die, you get locked out and have to call and talk on the phone for 20-30 minutes to convince them to not charge you $75 for a lock out. Everything in the world seems to give false positives. Aftershave, tooth paste, fruit juice, gatoraide. It has really convinced me to not drive at all during the period I am required to use this device. Its safer to just get a Uber than it is to risk a false positive with this often failing piece of equipment. The device itself is terrible. Driving down the road sounds like you have an altoid container of BB's on your dash. It rattles SO MUCH. You cant listen to music above a whisper or you might miss the random blow requests. I absolutely HATE THIS DEVICE with a passion and have seen other devices from Lifes*ver that are SO MUCH BETTER and actually have people you can understand when you call them. DO NOT USE INTOXILOCK!!!!!!!

Installation went smooth. I got detailed instructions on how to use the device. I did not realize I’d be taking readings while driving which was a little sketchy. It’s kind of scary to do while you’re driving, but I got through all in all it was a good process.

Frequently Asked Questions About Intoxalock Ignition Interlock

How does an interlock device work?

An ignition interlock device (IID) is a small breathalyzer installed in your vehicle to prevent it from starting if alcohol is detected on your breath. Before driving, you'll blow into the device. If your breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) is below the programmed limit, the car starts. Periodic retests occur during your trip to ensure continued compliance. What is the cost of an ignition interlock device?

The installation of an ignition interlock device, often called a car breathalyzer, typically costs between $70 and $150. This one-time fee is paid at the start of your lease and covers the service center's labor to install the device in your vehicle. Payment is made directly to the service center at the time of installation. For more on cost breakdowns, you can read our cost of ignition interlock device guide.
