The rental itself was fine, but I was misled about insurance, which resulted in over $320 in unnecessary charges.
At pickup, the Enterprise employee (Sierra) told me that because I was under 25 and my auto insurance was covering the daily rental rate, I had to purchase Enterprise’s additional insurance. I explicitly said I did not want it and already had excellent coverage. My car had just been stolen and totaled, and I was in the middle of buying a new one — there is no situation where I would have willingly agreed to pay an extra ~$20/day for insurance.
I later learned this coverage was completely optional.
When I reached out to dispute the charges, I was bounced around and ultimately sent back to the branch manager, who dismissed my concern by saying his employee “would never say that,” told me he would speak with her, and then never followed up. I even limited my request to a refund for the extended rental period, when no one asked me to re-consent to this optional insurance — still no resolution.
To make matters worse, after returning the vehicle to another Portland location, I accidentally left a valuable item inside. I called a few hours later and was told it would be held in lost and found. It wasn’t. The car was re-rented, and the item is gone.
Between being misled about insurance, the lack of accountability, and the poor handling afterward, this experience left me feeling taken advantage of during an already stressful situation. I will never be renting from Enterprise again, and to anyone reading this, especially if you’re under 25, I’d recommend avoiding their Downtown Portland locations.
