Get Your 90-Day Clean Report! Learn from My Experience A little over 10 years ago, I got a DUI. I completed all required classes and had my Intoxilock ignition interlock device removed after 6 months. I believed everything was taken care of and moved on with my life. For the next 10 years, I had no issues—until I was pulled over for a simple tail light. The officer informed me that my license still showed an active interlock requirement and issued me a ticket. This came as a complete shock. I contacted Intoxalock, thinking it would be an easy fix. They told me they no longer had records going back that far. Somehow, my required “90-day clean report” was never submitted—or never received—by the DMV, court, or police department. Because of this missing report, I was forced to start over. To legally drive again, I had to reinstall an interlock device with a different company and complete a 90-day period. The total cost—installation, removal, monthly fees, a ticket, and traffic school (to clear my record)—ended up being over $1,600. I had no way to prove I had already complied, simply because I didn’t retain a copy of that 90-day clean report—and Intoxalock never submitted it as they said they had to the DMV and court. My advice: If you ever have an interlock requirement, make sure you personally keep copies of all completion documents, especially your 90-day clean report. Do not rely on the company or the system to keep records for you long-term. This situation cost me time, money, and a lot of frustration. I hope sharing this helps someone else avoid going through the same thing.

Intoxalock is terrible to work with. And if you requested a reimbursement for issues that were not your fault they never sent the paperwork

So far my experience with this company was up and down. Now something messed up with my car’s electronics battery, starter, etc. Took $225 to get it towed to the service center where it took another $185 to get a diagnosis that it was the Intoxalock device causing the problems. Passed my 90 day clean report and have just needed this company to submit an email to the authorities which should have been sent in over a week ago, but to no avail. First I was told they would send me an email to give to the state police and dmv by one of intoxalocks representatives. After talking to the dmv and state police it is intoxalocks responsibility to do so. Now I’m supposed to get the device calibrated in 5 days when it should have already been removed. Just one email to the agencies and it would be over. Will keep updating until I can get it sorted or they can.

The service center was amazing and perfect. Intoxalock itself, however, does everything possible to confuse consumers (starting with being hard to reach a live person) to increase revenue with more fines and delays. I was blatantly lied to by customer service reps on 3 occasions. Choose ANY other ignition interlock company, I beg you!

Frequently Asked Questions About Intoxalock Ignition Interlock

How does an interlock device work?

An ignition interlock device (IID) is a small breathalyzer installed in your vehicle to prevent it from starting if alcohol is detected on your breath. Before driving, you'll blow into the device. If your breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) is below the programmed limit, the car starts. Periodic retests occur during your trip to ensure continued compliance. To read more on Intoxalock, you can read our ignition interlock device guide.

What is the cost of an ignition interlock device?

The installation of an ignition interlock device, often called a car breathalyzer, typically costs between $70 and $150. This one-time fee is paid at the start of your lease and covers the service center's labor to install the device in your vehicle. Payment is made directly to the service center at the time of installation. For more on cost breakdowns, you can read our cost of ignition interlock device guide.
