Here is how I was treated at Gill’s Tire/Point S. A one-word summation for this place is BEWARE! And make sure you demand the paperwork before walking out the door, with codes if you get a diagnostic test.
My battery died just over a week ago and, because they’re close, I took my car there to have a replacement. I was given the cost of the diagnostic test and an estimate of the battery replacement service. My stepdad discussed Interstate batteries with the service person and he agreed they were the best. It was settled, or so we thought, that we were getting an Interstate battery.
Once the car was finished I returned to Point S alone. They said they had to recharge for another diagnostic test so the full amount of the replacement and diagnostic test was over $500. Huh? I didn’t know what to say because I know nothing about these matters but I had my stepdad talk to them, and he got it down to $480 with a AAA discount, and paid. They didn’t have paperwork with the codes they pulled, specifically the one that stated my starter was going bad, which is what they told me before I left. I was told the paperwork would be emailed. It wasn’t.
I had a bad gut feeling so I called Midas, where I get my oil changed, and he asked me to come in the following morning. I called Point S because he wanted to see the codes and he was also really surprised that we were charged twice for an already-expensive diagnostic test. I called Point S, saying I needed the codes and was told it would be in my inbox before closing. It wasn’t. The next morning I talked to Ernest who spoke to me curtly, saying that they’d done over $10,000 in business the day before and sorry for not getting me the paperwork. When it did arrive in my inbox, it was only the invoice; no codes. I also noticed that they only used the model number for the battery they installed and when I looked it up, it was a cheaper Duracell, not an Interstate like we’d discussed.
My oil guy ran a diagnostic test at no charge, since I’d already overpaid for two at Point S (he’ll be getting my business in the future). He thought the diagnostic test wasn’t even performed. There is nothing wrong with the starter but he did note that the alternator needs to be watched and he told me the signs to keep an eye out for. Another code showed the manifold was showing signs of needing service down the road. When I told my stepdad he was angry and went to Point S on Black Friday to complain. He accused them of not doing the diagnostic test, and then proved his point and was partially reimbursed for it. They gave him some false story about having the codes and then deleting them, which is why they weren’t given to me. BS!
From now on, despite them being within walking distance of my home, I’ll never go back there and will tell everyone I know to avoid them because they’re not honest.
One more note. My guy at Midas is further away but I’ll go out of my way for good honest service. What we paid at Point S for the first diagnostic test is almost twice what Midas would charge, and Midas wouldn’t have charged to run a second test. And a reminder, they didn’t run a true diagnostic test anyway so, again, beware!

I'm a tech at a dealership in the area, and the guys there were easy to work with and willing to help with some coilover installs. Unlike Les Schwab.
