I generally love Sixt, but I will never rent from this location again. It took over an hour for multiple agents to even determine what inventory they had. In the middle of my check-in (around 10:00am), the agent assisting me disappeared for nearly 20 minutes. I eventually noticed him outside driving and parking cars. I was then told he was washing my car. No explanation, no communication. When I asked other staff what was happening—nothing. Crickets. He returned briefly, then vanished again. A manager eventually wandered in from outside and offered a casual apology. The whole thing felt surreal—like a Twilight Zone episode. While waiting, I overheard agents trying to calm other customers whose reservations were also messed up. By 10:30am there were at least 15 people in the queue, and things were clearly unraveling. To be fair, I did ultimately receive a car in the class I reserved—but the process to get there was absurd. The return experience was equally frustrating. The office is located inside a garage (normal for NYC), but returning the car requires driving up a confusing corkscrew ramp six or seven levels with minimal signage. After that, if you have luggage, you get the pleasure of hauling everything to a small elevator, riding it back down with other customers and their bags, and exiting at street level. Sixt prides itself on the car, but here the experience completely eclipses the product—and not in a good way.

I needed a car for a day in Manhattan. SIXT offered the best price and the most convenient location, close to my hotel. I was very pleased with the experience. The check in process was smooth and transparent. They offered me some additional features, that I found helpful, but they did not try to up sale me. The car was great and in excellent condition. Their representative, Bionny was very helpful and friendly. He made the whole experience even better. The SIXT location in lower Manhattan offers easy access to the highway and the garage is open 24/7, which made returning the car after hours a breeze. Everybody was very accommodating, and it was great experience. Highly recommended.

It’s been over 4 months since I rented a car with this company, and I never received my security deposit refund of USD 200. I had given up on getting it back, but then on December 12, they charged me an additional USD 103.55 for a fine that I had already paid. My bank shows a total of USD 318 charged and no refund at all. I’ve repeatedly requested the ARN for the refund and a credit memo showing the date, amount, last 4 digits of my card, and reference, but they have provided nothing. Without the ARN, my bank cannot trace the credit. What’s shocking is how quickly they can charge automatically, but when it comes to returning money, there’s no action. This is unacceptable and shows a complete lack of customer service. I will share this experience everywhere I can because I’m not the first person this has happened to. Avoid this company at all costs.

Terrible customer service. Arbitrarily accused me of having a fake ID, and had me wait at the location for over an hour while they spoke with their extremely rude “security team” who obviously knows nothing about security. Will never rent from them again.

We had a very poor experience with SIXT. The vehicle smelled strongly of smoke when we picked it up for our one day rental. Upon returning the car after-hours to the Battery Park garage, three hours before the scheduled return time, SIXT failed to check the vehicle back in promptly. Because of their own internal failure, we received multiple notifications stating that the vehicle had not been returned. SIXT then began issuing rental-extension notices and charges that ultimately totaled nearly three times the original rental amount, despite the car having been returned early. Thankfully, we live near the branch and were able to physically confirm that the car had, in fact, been returned and subsequently moved by SIXT employees, and address the erroneous extension charges in-person. Even after resolving those issues, SIXT assessed an additional $60 “lost parking ticket” fee, despite the ticket having been properly left in the vehicle at return. It took three phone calls and an in-person visit to finally close out the rental correctly. The net result: A smelly vehicle, a rental that cost significantly more than advertised and hours of unnecessary time spent correcting SIXT’s operational failures. If the CFPB were still fully functional, I would recommend an inquiry relating to unfair, deceptive, and potentially predatory practices, particularly toward consumers seeking more affordable travel options during the holidays. If you plan on renting from SIXT, consider this a reminder: Caveat Emptor — Buyer Beware.
