A masterclass in how to destroy a customer who already paid you
One star is generous.
On April 10th at 9:15 PM, I arrived at the National counter inside Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas with a prepaid reservation, exhausted after an international flight, and walked out hours later without a car, without a refund, and with a much clearer understanding of what this location actually sells: not car rentals, but leverage.
The problem? A minor discrepancy between the name on my driver’s license and the name on the reservation. Not a different person. Not a fake document. A formatting difference of the kind every competent rental agency on earth resolves in ninety seconds.
I offered, in order: my national ID, my domestic driver’s license, my International Driving Permit, my passport, and official digital verification. Every single document pointed to the same human being standing in front of them. Any one of them would have been enough at a Hertz counter in Rome, an Avis counter in Lisbon, or frankly at a National counter in almost any other city. Here, none of it mattered — because solving the problem was never the goal.
The agent and her manager were not confused. They were not bound by some rigid system. They made a choice. And the choice was to watch a tired foreign customer twist, and then quote him over $2,500 extra to unlock the car he had already paid for. That is not policy enforcement. That is a shakedown dressed up in a uniform.
What struck me most was the complete absence of anything resembling a human instinct. No attempt to escalate. No attempt to call a supervisor who could actually think. No “let me see what I can do.” Just the flat, bored cruelty of two people who have figured out that a jet-lagged tourist landing at Harry Reid at 9 PM is the easiest mark in Nevada, and that the house always wins if you simply refuse to move.
I lost the money. I lost the reservation. I lost half a day. What National lost is harder to quantify, but I intend to make sure it is not small.
This incident is being formally escalated to Enterprise Holdings Executive Customer Service (National’s parent company), to the Emerald Club corporate complaints channel, and to the Better Business Bureau of Southern Nevada. It will also be posted, in this same level of detail, across every travel forum and review platform where future customers research Las Vegas car rentals — including Tripadvisor, Yelp, Google Maps, and the main expat and traveler communities I belong to.
If you are reading this before booking: understand that when something goes wrong at this location — and with standards this arbitrary, something will — there is no goodwill in reserve. No judgment. No flexibility. Only a price list and a smirk.
Book somewhere your money still buys you basic dignity. It will not buy you that at the National counter at Harry Reid International on the night of April 10th.

National always do everything they can to make everything convenient. Always friendly service, and they want honest feedback on experience and the follow up is personal from executives if you had a problem with the vehicle for some reason. I’ve been using them exclusively for years now after trying out every brand out there. I only use someone else if National just doesn’t have a vehicle for some reason.
Service at major hubs is really good. But at small airports (think John Wayne or similar size) they’re just always next level even without executive status.

I typically only rent with National Rental Car pretty often actually. This time was quite embarrassing though. I picked my car that was under the Emerald Club sign I believe it was an mid-size suv like I always get. I was leaving the garage at the checkout, I gave the lady my DL and thought everything was cool. Well she gets a call on the radio and says "tell that guy he cant take that car, he was supposed to take a car in the first four isles" i explained to the lady this car was in the second isle. She had nothing... so I tried to explain again she insisted I back up and take the car back for a lady that is Emerald Club executive.. I was shocked. One because I am Emerald Club Executive Elite. I have been for a long time now. So I backed up and parked the car back where I got it. I asked for a manager, he came and tried explaining things to me. I got all of my things out of the car and got into a small truck. The lady didnt want the car after she heard what happen. They still made me leave the car and pick something else. Ive never been so embarrassed. This was not a good feeling for me at all.

I rented a car for a road trip. About 6 hours in, the car breaks down at 3 am in the middle of no where. I call National roadside service and am told that the tow truck is a minimum of 90 mins, then once it is towed, they would send me an Uber to the closest branch and it would be a 4-6 hour wait for a replacement car. Long story short, after waiting for the tow truck for over FOUR hours, I gave up and had to make my own arrangements since I was stranded in the desert between Arizona and the New Mexico border. I called National a few times during this event to give updates and to ask for additional resources and was basically was blown off. The best part is I paid $215 for a hotel (National would not cover) and had to drive 6 hours back home, just to be charged the daily rental rate. You'd think after all the inconveniences and the fact they left me stranded in an unsafe condition for hours they wouldn't charge me. This is the first I've rented with this company and will definitely be my last. Think twice before renting from National.

I just wanted to say the employee her name was Remi was fantastic, friendly, and personable something you don’t see often especially at any car rental place so I was shocked how incredibly helpful and friendly she was kudos to her. She even went as far as to sign me up for the emerald club selection. Please give remi a raise she is awesome 👏.. Hope we go back to Las Vegas she will be there again to help us. We got a new suv and that was so incredibly nice 👍. Thank you National you guys rock..If anyone needs a rental car for Las Vegas go to national you won’t be disappointed.
