    We had a check engine light on towards the end of our trip. We called the national number and a representative told us someone would switch out our car for us in Sedona Arizona. We waited the entire day for a call back and when we did receive one, our two options were to drive an hour and a half north to Flagstaff or to drop it off locally. However, the local office closes at 1 o’clock in the afternoon. By the time someone called us back the office had closed. We had a planned sunrise hike, Friday morning, which we blew off in order to accommodate turning the car in. Miraculously the check engine light went off that morning. We never needed to turn the car in as the light was off, but no one followed up, and I explained the whole thing over the phone to them as well and never heard back from anyone. But our representative in Albuquerque could not have been more helpful and more courteous and polite. His name was Colt.

    The SUV crossover was great. They need more associates available to receive patrons to this business. They need to make available the closing receipt before we leave.     Honestly, this was the worst rental car experience I’ve ever had. About 2.5 hours into our drive from ABQ to LA, the vehicle started displaying a “Start/Stop System Fault” error and completely broke down, leaving my son, my dog, and me stranded on the side of a busy highway. I immediately called roadside assistance and was told it would be another two hours before a tow truck could reach us. For safety reasons, I had to call the police to get us transported to a nearby hotel. Since then, the experience has been filled with miscommunication between customer service, the rental location, and multiple tow companies. I’ve been hung up on, refused access to a manager, and even told that if I did not end the call, they would hang up on me because they could not provide an ETA for a replacement vehicle. We have been stranded since 9 AM. It is now after 2 PM and we still do not have a car. Randy, the company initially assigned to deliver a replacement vehicle, told me they were denied when they arrived at National and were unable to pick up the car. When I spoke with the manager, Carlos, he said that was not true and that they never even went to that location. Randy then stated they were sent to a different location and that may have caused the issue. Shortly after, I was informed that National canceled Randy’s service altogether and arranged for Classy Auto Recovery to drive me two hours back to ABQ to retrieve another vehicle. While I appreciate Classy Auto Recovery’s willingness to help, it makes no sense why, after confirming that the disabled vehicle had been towed, National would deny a replacement vehicle from being delivered to us. I was told that sometimes they require the original vehicle to be processed before issuing a new one, but that does not justify leaving a family stranded for hours without clear communication. I requested that the rental be fully comped, considering we were given a faulty vehicle and experienced extremely poor customer service. I was told by Carlos that he could not authorize that and would need to escalate it to his manager. Between the unsafe breakdown, hours of waiting, conflicting information, refusal to transfer to a manager(customer service line), and being hung up on, this situation has been unacceptable. No customer, especially one traveling with a child and pet, should be treated this way.
