For a relative, the servicing station Performance Plus Auto was very helpful, but the device was troublesome. Since it was voluntary and stranded two different drivers 3x- we are having it removed. The call times to get help are long, you can't understand the accent of the company when they call you, and the (free) tow truck service kept us waiting (stranded) 8 hrs., one time, and 4 hours the next. If the device malfunctions the vehicle will not drive. You cannot rely that your car will start, and continue to drive because the device goes faulty. It also constantly drains the car battery. If you have to have one for DUIs its better than not driving, but as a deterrent tool by choice-- it is very expensive and a lot of bother. It is also DANGEROUS because it asks you for breathing tests (called rolling retests), at intervals while you are driving. Anyone who drives you car has to go through all the procedures. The mouth clip frequently pops off the device (onto floor of your vehicle), and then you have just seconds to find it, reinsert, and blow before you vehicle shuts down, and this is while driving! In very cold weather, the device won't activate and you sit in a cold vehicle trying to warm it up, but you can't turn on car for heat. When it locks you OUT, you have to make calls, and have the car towed to the servicing auto center. You have to wait WITH the vehicle and you have no power for air cond., or heat. The first incident, 90 degrees, my ill relative was stuck in the car 8 hours and the tow truck was sent from 100 miles away, even when the map showed tow was 15 min. away, it detoured to another call 75 miles away and we waited an additonal 3 hours! There is no peace of mind with this device.

Frequently Asked Questions About Intoxalock Ignition Interlock

How does an interlock device work?

An ignition interlock device (IID) is a small breathalyzer installed in your vehicle to prevent it from starting if alcohol is detected on your breath. Before driving, you'll blow into the device. If your breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) is below the programmed limit, the car starts. Periodic retests occur during your trip to ensure continued compliance. What is the cost of an ignition interlock device?

The installation of an ignition interlock device, often called a car breathalyzer, typically costs between $70 and $150. This one-time fee is paid at the start of your lease and covers the service center's labor to install the device in your vehicle. Payment is made directly to the service center at the time of installation. For more on cost breakdowns, you can read our cost of ignition interlock device guide.
