They refused to do it because I have a torn tie rod boot - even though the tie rod end itself has zero play and is functioning perfectly fine. A torn boot is a protective rubber cover. It doesn't affect alignment and it doesn't mean the part is about to fail. It's a maintenance issue that develops over time, not an immediate safety concern. I've been working on cars for 20 years. I have an associate's degree in automotive technology and took automotive programs in high school. I know what I'm talking about. I checked the tie rod end myself - zero play. The only reason I came to them is because I don't have an alignment machine in my backyard. The reason I wasn't concerned: 1) There was zero play in the joint. 2) The tear was very small - I could easily pack it with grease to protect it. 3) This is an old car that gets driven very little, so it's not like it's racking up miles of wear and tear. They kept apologizing and saying "it's against our rules" and "we don't want comebacks." I don't care about their corporate policy - a tight tie rod end with no play is perfectly safe to align. They wasted my time and refused to do the job I came in for over a non-issue. If the joint had actual play or looseness, I'd understand. But refusing service when the part is functioning fine? That's just covering their own butt at the customer's expense. I won't be back. There are plenty of shops that will actually do the work instead of hiding behind unnecessary policies.
