⭐️ 1 Star – Absolutely unacceptable experience with Intoxalock
I would strongly NOT recommend Intoxalock to anyone.
This company has been nothing but frustrating, disorganized, and financially draining from start to finish. I followed all requirements exactly as instructed, yet I was still charged for a calibration that should have been covered. On top of that, they charged me triple for a monitoring service on a Monday, even though they were fully aware my device was scheduled to be removed that same week on Thursday.
I also made multiple requests to have the device removed early (before my lease period ended) specifically to avoid extra removal costs—and they completely ignored that, resulting in more unnecessary charges.
The billing issues don’t stop there. They repeatedly claimed they sent a PO/code to my service provider for recalibration payments (which is supposed to be covered under my plan), yet the last three visits they failed to do so, forcing me to pay out of pocket. That is unacceptable.
Customer service is just as bad. I have spent HOURS on hold—easily over 10+ hours total— because their system is constantly experiencing “technical difficulties.” It feels like they make it nearly impossible to get help or resolve issues.
As someone with a disability, this entire experience has been even more difficult, and it truly feels like they take advantage of customers rather than support them.
To top it off, they are now trying to charge a final closing fee of around $70, after everything else I’ve already paid.
This company lacks accountability, communication, and basic customer respect. There are clearly major issues with their billing practices and internal systems.
Save yourself the stress, time, and money—go with literally any other company.

My device showed a lockout
I paid my balance due but still do not know what the problem is due to lack of human contact. Systems down. Very frustrating. I can pay my bill, you take my money but I have no idea what the problem is. My calibration date is 3/30/26. Please reply. Customer service should be number one
I am very pleased with my recent contact from intoxilock. I received a reply and a phone call. Th phone call addressed my issues. Thank you

Frequently Asked Questions About Intoxalock Ignition Interlock
How does an interlock device work?
An ignition interlock device (IID) is a small breathalyzer installed in your vehicle to prevent it from starting if alcohol is detected on your breath. Before driving, you'll blow into the device. If your breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) is below the programmed limit, the car starts. Periodic retests occur during your trip to ensure continued compliance. To read more on Intoxalock, you can read our ignition interlock device guide.
What is the cost of an ignition interlock device?
The installation of an ignition interlock device, often called a car breathalyzer, typically costs between $70 and $150. This one-time fee is paid at the start of your lease and covers the service center's labor to install the device in your vehicle. Payment is made directly to the service center at the time of installation. For more on cost breakdowns, you can read our cost of ignition interlock device guide.
How do I use my interlock device?
Using an IID is simple. To start your vehicle, blow into the device as directed. If the device detects no alcohol, your car will start. You may be prompted for "rolling retests" while driving, where you’ll blow into the device again to confirm compliance. How-to videos are also available on the Intoxalock mobile app.
Where do I get an ignition interlock device?
Ignition interlock devices can be installed at certified service centers nationwide. Intoxalock offers a convenient network of locations and helps you schedule an installation appointment near you. Visit our Intoxalock locations page or call us to find the nearest service center and begin the installation process.
How long will my installation take?
Installing an ignition interlock device typically takes 1-2 hours, depending on your vehicle type. Certified technicians ensure the device is properly installed and provide you with training on how to use it. Contact Intoxalock for an appointment and an accurate time estimate for your installation.
What happens if I fail a breath test on my ignition interlock device?
If you fail a breath test, your vehicle will not start, and the device will log the event. Depending on your state’s regulations, multiple failed tests may trigger additional penalties, such as lockouts or reporting to your monitoring authority. Intoxalock devices allow you to retest after a short wait if alcohol is no longer detected. Always follow your state’s guidelines to remain compliant.
Can I install an ignition interlock device in a vehicle I don’t own?
Yes, in most cases, you can install an ignition interlock device in a vehicle you regularly drive, even if you’re not the registered owner. However, the vehicle owner must provide consent for the installation. Intoxalock works with you and the owner to ensure compliance with state regulations and the successful setup of the device.
What should I do if my ignition interlock device locks me out?
If your ignition interlock device locks you out, it’s usually due to missed tests, failed tests, or state-specific requirements.
