Always take the time to thoroughly inspect your rental vehicle before signing. I learned this lesson the hard way.
I rented a one-way truck for a cross-state move—what should have been a familiar and uneventful drive across three states. I’ve made this trip several times before, even under heavier snow conditions, without a single issue. This time was different.
Within the first hour, the engine oil life indicator read 0%, and the maintenance light illuminated. I was already committed to a strict timeline, so I continued forward—trusting that the vehicle had been properly serviced. That assumption was my first mistake.
As I entered the Rocky Mountains, the truck’s worn tires began to lose traction, even with 4x4 engaged. On a descending curve, the rear end slid out, and the vehicle veered toward the guardrail. Relying on instinct and experience, I managed to control the slide and guide the truck along the barrier, avoiding what could have been a catastrophic loss of control. The truck sustained only a dented scrape—fortunate, considering the circumstances.
For the next stretch, I was forced to reduce speed to 30 mph in a 60 mph zone, watching a long line of vehicles build behind me through the mountain passes. Every turn demanded precision and restraint.
When I finally reached level ground, I stopped to inspect the tires with the classic penny check. See pics for yourself. On addition, I discovered marijuana residue lodged between the seats, clear evidence of a vehicle that had not been properly cleaned or inspected before being released.
It was a sobering reminder: mechanical negligence can turn even a routine drive into a near disaster. Always—without exception—inspect before you sign from this place.
