An elderly woman came in because her car wasn’t starting. This store sold her a battery for $230, which is insane on its own. She comes back 3 days later because the car still isn’t starting. Auto Zone told her that she needed a starter. No one confirmed this first…no one hit the starter to diagnose the starter to be bad. The lady calls her mechanic saying Auto Zone told her the starter is bad. The mechanic pops the hood and does what every good mechanic does…YOU TEST THE BATTERY FIRST. If the battery is weak, then you cannot diagnose the starter or the alternator. Surprise! The battery wouldn’t hold a charge. The mechanic took a video of the battery CLEARLY draining as soon as the ignition was turned off. That’s a BAD BATTERY. He takes the battery back to Auto Zone and explains the problem, expecting an uncomplicated exchange so he can install a good battery and continue diagnosing the starter. The assistant manager was immediately defensive and said that the battery was drained because she didn’t start the car for 2 days. That’s illogical and flat out false. How many of you lovely readers have parked your car on Friday, stayed home all weekend, only to have your car start without issue on Monday? You know why…BECAUSE BATTERIES DON’T DEPLETE OVER A WEEKEND! Anyone that tells you that you have to start your car every day or the battery will go bad is lying to you. They either don’t know what they’re talking about or they’re deliberately manipulating you. The assistant manager proceeds to dismiss the mechanic’s complaint and video evidence, saying that THEY will test the battery themselves, but he’ll have to come back in 3 hours when they call him. They called 5 hours later saying they’ll replace the battery, but they won’t warranty the replacement. Nice. He comes back the next morning (of course Auto Zone waited until closing to call him back) only to learn that he has to wait another 45 minutes for the manager to come in. Fine. The manager, who also had a nasty attitude, brings out the new, no-warranty battery. The mechanic politely asks him to test the new battery. Unsurprisingly, the brand new battery that they refused to warranty tested as 70%. That means over a quarter of the “new” battery was already depleted. The manager huffed and puffed, but he couldn’t deny that the mechanic was right. He grumbled and took the battery off to be charged while the mechanic waited another 30 minutes. The management at this location has proven to be dishonest, rude, condescending, and not knowledgeable about how automobiles actually work. These clowns sold an old lady a bad battery for an outrageous price, made a LASTING impression of pure harassment when the mechanic tried to help her get back on the road, AND TRIED TO SELL HER A STARTER THAT SHE DIDN’T EVEN NEED!!!! It’s insulting. How many other people have they blatantly ripped off? I suspect the list is long. 😒
