And the man at the counter was very rude when I told him that I knew I had money on my card and it still declined. I'm pretty sure that there was just a problem with the card reader, but still his customer service was atrocious.

For some reason their computer wouldn't accept it. I even showed in the app where I had it saved. Instead of calling a boss over and trying to figure out what's wrong I was more or less expected to pay for my "free" drinks or leave, so I left. I'm not paying for something that I was supposed to get for free, for being a rewards member. Considering how much Pilot/ Flying J rips off drivers, that they know don't have many options, they could have at least honored the coupon in the app.
