Mills (Newburgh location) recently did repair work on our car as part of an insurance claim. I submitted the claim to our provider and chose Mills based on our prior positive experiences with them. I was unaware until recently that the business was sold in 2022. We dealt with Mills sometime prior to 2022 (Maxwelll Avenue location) for the repair of damage on the same car that was almost identical to the damage in this claim and had excellent service. The Maxwell Avenue location was not listed as a service location option this time so I chose the Newburgh location. My husband took the car in for an estimate, met with a representative about the damage and the claim, and walked the car with the person. It was clear at that time to my husband and the person doing the estimate that the claim was for a specific area of the car (rear passenger door) due to damage that was incurred when I was leaving a parking garage and sideswiped a concrete pylon. This is what the claim was made for; this is what was initially discussed with Mills and this is the repair work that was initially estimated. The car was dropped off and a couple of days later our provider contacted us to let us know that the estimated damage coats exceeded the value of the car and it would be “totaled”. This is when we realized that the estimate had been drastically revised to nearly four times the initial estimate, and we notified our provider about the initial lower estimate. When our provider contacted Mills, they said that it must have been a miscommunication. However, they’d already begun taking the entire front of the car apart to repair the “additional damage” (that was actually cosmetic and had nothing to do with the claim) listed on the revised estimate. The insurance provider contacted Mills and the estimate was revised again - lower but still 2x the initial estimate. It took them nearly a month to fix it. I honestly had no idea what we would get back. When it was returned to us, upon leaving, I realized the right turn signal was inoperable, and when I got onto the interstate, the car started making a horrible scraping noise so we immediately returned to the shop. As we pulled in, the Master Warning Light came on, indicating a critical issue needed to be addressed. It turns out the a wire to the turn signal hadn’t been re-connected. The scraping noise was from one of the plastic engine shields underneath the car that had not been reattached correctly. Those problems were “fixed” within 10 minutes, and we left. Later that evening as my husband was driving the car, the plastic engine shield fell down again. It had been shoved up under the car and not reattached. He had to do it himself the next day. To be clear, we had no issues with our insurance company and there was no misunderstanding about the damage to the car and what the claim was to cover between us and our provider. Our overall experience with Mills was subpar at best, and the cherry on top of the entire experience was how it was returned to us. We will not be returning to Mills and will not recommend their services to anyone.
