From my very 1st appointment, I should've seen the red flags. Took my car in to have it installed, only to have the service shop tell me they had no appointment for me. The next week when I took it back, I had another shop calling me very angry and asking why I missed my appointment. Apparently, Intoxalock scheduled multiple appointments for me at different places. Now I've had the crap in my car for 2 days and it's already malfunctioning. Called Intoxalock immediately and was told to call back the next day so they could schedule an inspection. When? Who knows? Do they care if I have to go to go to work? Nah, but they sure care about getting their money. I'm not sure why they don't realize I installed this thing so I could keep driving, not so I can be stranded at various places, have to take my car in repeatedly when the thing doesn't work randomly, and all the while be charged ridiculous amounts for it. DO NOT DO THIS TO YOURSELF. I promise you the suspension on your license will be much easier to deal with than this company. Their devices are horrible, and you will regret every second of it. No one ever told me that you have to make sure to blow just right or it won't work. No one told me it will retest you every 10-20 minutes. No one told me you can't wear perfume or cologne, don't use hairspray or hand sanitizer, can't eat or drink anything, on top of the fact that it will void your car warranty, and will most likely damage your car beyond repair. And when that happens, the service shop and Intoxalock will wash their hands of any liability. Again, DO NOT GET THIS THING!!!
Frequently Asked Questions About Intoxalock Ignition Interlock
How does an interlock device work?
An ignition interlock device (IID) is a small breathalyzer installed in your vehicle to prevent it from starting if alcohol is detected on your breath. Before driving, you'll blow into the device. If your breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) is below the programmed limit, the car starts. Periodic retests occur during your trip to ensure continued compliance. To read more on Intoxalock, you can read our ignition interlock device guide.
What is the cost of an ignition interlock device?
The installation of an ignition interlock device, often called a car breathalyzer, typically costs between $70 and $150. This one-time fee is paid at the start of your lease and covers the service center's labor to install the device in your vehicle. Payment is made directly to the service center at the time of installation. For more on cost breakdowns, you can read our cost of ignition interlock device guide.
How do I use my interlock device?
Using an IID is simple. To start your vehicle, blow into the device as directed. If the device detects no alcohol, your car will start. You may be prompted for "rolling retests" while driving, where you’ll blow into the device again to confirm compliance. How-to videos are also available on the Intoxalock mobile app.
