- MPMike PJan 26, 20261.0I just returned from picking up a battery at Advance Auto Parts – Store #4051 123 N Northwest Hwy, Palatine, IL 60067. I asked the cashier if they could install the battery in my Honda Odyssey. He said it “depends on the setup,” then came outside to look. After seeing the plastic air scoop covering the battery, he told me they “can’t do these types” because of the plastic around it. I explained that it’s held on by two clips and takes about 10 seconds to remove. I even offered to remove it myself if he could lend me a screwdriver. He then said they’re not allowed to be outside for very long and refused to help. Their advertising promotes free battery installation, and there’s no mention of exclusions like this. There were two employees working at the time; the one who refused help was the shorter of the two. I could have purchased the battery for less elsewhere, but chose Advance Auto Parts specifically because of the free installation. Unfortunately, this felt more like unwillingness to help than an actual policy issue. Very disappointing experience. It took me 15 minutes to change it out. Lazy!

Brakes work by using friction to turn kinetic energy into heat. There are two designs: drum brakes (older), and disc brakes (newer). Both use hydraulic pressure to move a piston outward. In disc brakes, the piston is located inside a caliper that houses brake pads and fits over the rotor. The friction lining on the pads makes contact with the rotor to slow the vehicle. In drum brakes, the piston moves two curved shoes lined with friction material against the inside of the brake drum.
