Service technician made sure i had viewed all 8 videos from the website, i assured him i did. He mentioned if you are a permit holder in Illinois-i said i AM NOT, I have a valid DL. He repeated rules as a permit holder, i corrected him AGAIN, emphasizing i have a valid DL. After, my reminder, he became sarcastic toward me, finishing his scripted instructions, saying, "i'm trying to help you". Next was practicing the breath-inhale-breath pattern, which i had to repeat more than 4 times. When technician released me to my vehicle, i still failed the test multiple times without any success! I went back inside to get the technician to TELL ME WHAT I'M DOING WRONG! His Instructions WERE A COMPLETE & TOTAL FAILURE. Finally after 30 minutes of practice & live testing, i finally passed. My confidence in the proper equipment usage was destroyed. I went to bed that night i & contemplated uninstalling this fussy device and paying someone else to reinstall a different device! Also, REQUIRED VEHICLE DROPOFF was NEVER signaled ahead of appointment. i had to pay rideshare to get back home & for pickup!!! It took them 6.5 hours to complete the job. I couldn't plan any errands to complete that day. Overall, a A COMPLETELY DIFFFICULT & EXHAUSTING EXPERIENCE!!!

Frequently Asked Questions About Intoxalock Ignition Interlock
How does an interlock device work?
An ignition interlock device (IID) is a small breathalyzer installed in your vehicle to prevent it from starting if alcohol is detected on your breath. Before driving, you'll blow into the device. If your breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) is below the programmed limit, the car starts. Periodic retests occur during your trip to ensure continued compliance. To read more on Intoxalock, you can read our ignition interlock device guide.
What is the cost of an ignition interlock device?
The installation of an ignition interlock device, often called a car breathalyzer, typically costs between $70 and $150. This one-time fee is paid at the start of your lease and covers the service center's labor to install the device in your vehicle. Payment is made directly to the service center at the time of installation. For more on cost breakdowns, you can read our cost of ignition interlock device guide.
How do I use my interlock device?
Using an IID is simple. To start your vehicle, blow into the device as directed. If the device detects no alcohol, your car will start. You may be prompted for "rolling retests" while driving, where you’ll blow into the device again to confirm compliance. How-to videos are also available on the Intoxalock mobile app.

What happens if I fail a breath test on my ignition interlock device?
If you fail a breath test, your vehicle will not start, and the device will log the event. Depending on your state’s regulations, multiple failed tests may trigger additional penalties, such as lockouts or reporting to your monitoring authority. Intoxalock devices allow you to retest after a short wait if alcohol is no longer detected. Always follow your state’s guidelines to remain compliant.
