National is always great. I always rent from them and they are always the best. Their cars are always new or near new. I tried others that were a little bit cheaper and I learned why fast. Those rental car services had older, dirtier cars and the people were not as friendly.

The Emerald Executive (EE) Experience:
As a loyal National user, this location was a letdown compared to others.
Selection: The "Executive Selection" lineup was very poor. Two rows were totally empty, and the half-row that was filled had mostly Malibu sedans.
Lack of Options: I am not saying the Malibu is a "bad" car, but the benefit of EE status is having selection options, which were non-existent here. There were 3+ other groups also waiting in the EE line hoping for an SUV.
Service & The Wait:
Check-In Agent: The agent at the booth was not helpful. They mentioned a car "might" become available if I waited but were unable to provide a time.
The Result: I waited about 30 minutes and eventually got an older Subaru SUV.
Vehicle Condition: The Subaru was disappointing—the interior was outdated and there was dirt in the car.
The Return:
Drop-off: On the positive side, the return was easy and the return staff was friendly.
Verdict:
Usually, I have great experiences with National, but this HNL location failed on the Executive Aisle benefits. Be prepared for limited choices if you want an SUV.

The rental experience at HNL was extremely poor. As an Executive Club member, I am supposed to be eligible for a full size car that is waiting when I arrive. For the fourth time in a row, the airport didn't have any vehicles, and it took over 30 minutes for any cars to show up. Instead of getting a full size car, I was given a rundown Toyota Corolla that had over 30,000 miles, ran poorly, and literally stunk. After multiple years of poor service, I am going to switch rental car companies. Advise going with another company if you are going to Hawaii.
Additional comment: The automated bot response from “Isabella” is indicative of the poor service that National now provides. The link Isabella provides leads to a generic customer problem page and doesn’t offer a real opportunity to get National to address the complaints I discuss above. Don’t be deceived. There is no meaningful way to express concerns to National. The hope is that consumers won’t complain about this company’s inability to fulfill its promises. The company knows how to contact me if it really want to discuss my awful consumer experience. I will follow up on this comment if anybody from Natioal bothers to get in touch.

Completely unacceptable service. We arrived in Maui with zero options for a car. They had nothing ready for us to drive and blamed “the holidays.” Management did nothing for guest recovery. As someone with executive level status, I want to thank them for this experience. I will now be a customer for Avis, who gave me a vehicle in five minutes…even when I hadn’t booked a vehicle MONTHS in advance…and even during “the holidays.”

Very frustrating not being able to speak to someone at the local rental office. The national phone number could not provide us with the following:
1. No directions on where to drive to pick up my rental car. There were multiple signs if you were Returning a rental car, but absolutely nothing on how to drive up to pick up your car (picking up a car for my daughter and family from Honolulu airport). It took me over an hour and asking three separate areas where to pick up my car. No one had the correct answer to help me. I ultimately had to park at the airport terminal and walk a distance to their rental desk at a separate location. Once there, no one was there, only a sign directing me to the third floor. When I reached the third floor, no one was there either. Someone from Enterprise suggested I wait in the vicinity for someone to come. Very odd.
2. No local number to help with obtaining a spare key (since we thought we misplaced our key). The national phone center kept redirecting us to their national number for roadside assistance recording … no one remotely local, nor a local number where someone locally could be reached to help.
3. No local number to speak to someone on whether they could help me install an infant child seat. I simply had to wing it and hope it all worked out.
Unfortunately, I will not be using National any more.
