  Tesco allowed me to fuel up while wearing my motorcycle helmet with a balaclava underneath, then only challenged me when I went inside to pay. The petrol station employee demanded that I remove my helmet, then after I did, demanded that I remove my balaclava as well. At no point did she properly explain why. It was only when the manager came over that I was told this was apparently for age verification. How is a customer supposed to respond properly when staff are making demands without explaining the reason? If Tesco requires helmets or face coverings to be removed for age verification, that should be clearly explained and dealt with before the pump is authorised, not after the customer has already taken fuel and is trying to pay. I was stood there trying to pay. If I intended to ride off without paying, I would have done that instead of going inside. Making it difficult for a customer to pay after already allowing them to fuel up makes no sense. The request to remove my balaclava also felt inconsistent and discriminatory. Would Tesco ask a Muslim woman wearing a burka or niqab to uncover her face before being allowed to pay? If customers with religious face coverings are allowed to pay without removing them, then treating me differently for wearing a balaclava feels unfair. The petrol station employee’s attitude was shocking and completely unprofessional. Instead of explaining the situation calmly, she escalated it by calling security and a manager, seemingly because she was offended during the disagreement. Another staff member with piercings also made personal comments like, “Do you speak to your mum like that? I bet you do,” which was completely inappropriate. To be clear, I had no issue with the manager who came over. She handled it swiftly, explained the situation, and I was finally able to pay. The issue was the rude, unclear, and unnecessary behaviour from the petrol station staff before that. Tesco needs clearer procedures for motorcyclists and face coverings, and staff need better training on how to deal with customers professionally and consistently.
