I travel a lot and have rented cars in many places across Europe. Most of those rentals were arranged by my employer, while I have only occasionally rented cars myself for holidays. Unfortunately, I’ve had several unpleasant experiences with rental companies over the years, from unexpectedly inflated invoices and damage charges for issues I didn’t cause, to hidden fees. Thankfully, in those situations, the photos and videos I always take before driving away were enough to prove my case.
Because of those experiences, I always rent a car with a certain amount of anxiety and pay close attention to every detail.
This branch, however, was different.
I reserved online a car here for one week and booked the smallest, most economical model at a fair and competitive price. To my surprise I didn’t had to pay anything online as the reservation was done. Instead, I received a brand-new mid-size car, which was a pleasant surprise.
After 31 years of driving left-hand drive cars, this was my first time driving in the UK. It was an almost surreal experience. My instincts were telling me one thing, while everything happening around me in traffic required me to do the exact opposite. It took me about a full day to adapt.
Only three minutes after leaving the rental office, I pulled over to adjust my driving position more comfortably. While doing so, I accidentally touched a curb with the left rear wheel. I wasn’t driving fast at all, but because I still had no perception of the left side of the car, the tyre suffered a small but visible gouge. Fortunately, nothing else was damaged, and the car drove perfectly for the entire trip.
When I returned the vehicle, I was disappointed that my very first rental incident had happened and, naturally, I was worried about how much it would cost.
Instead, I was greeted by one of the calmest, most empathetic and understanding rental agents I have ever met. He patiently explained the entire claims process and why the tyre had to be replaced for the safety of the next customer. The £200 was temporarily held from my deposit, and just two days later I received the difference back after the final assessment. I genuinely believe the final charge for the damage was fair and reasonable.
Overall, I am extremely happy that I chose to rent from this National Car Rental branch. The pricing was transparent, the costs were fair—especially by UK standards—the communication was excellent, everything was handled quickly and professionally, and there were absolutely no unpleasant surprises.
Next time I’m in Scotland, I won’t even look elsewhere—I will rent from this branch again, and I will happily recommend it to anyone. And be more careful when parking, for sure!
My only regret is that I didn’t remember the name of the agent who handled my return, because I would have loved to thank him personally once again for his professionalism and kindness. That said, every member of the team I interacted with deserves recognition. They made what could have been a very stressful experience feel straightforward, fair and respectful.
If you’re looking for transparent pricing, professionalism, excellent customer service and a rental experience you can trust, I highly recommend renting your car here.
Well done, and thank you!
