- GRgabriel reisOct 1, 20261.0I am extremely concerned by the information provided by this garage. My girlfriend called this garage simply to get a quote for the repairs following her MOT failure. During that call she was told by a member of staff called *Tom* that by law because the car had failed its MOT with Major defects, she shouldn’t drive the car anymore and was only allowed to drive it to and from a garage. That information was presented to her as a legal requirement and caused her unnecessary concern about whether she was even allowed to use the car. Such misinformation is wholly unacceptable!!! I work in a garage myself and I am familiar with MOT rules and the distinction between Major and Dangerous defects. I therefore called the garage myself to challenge what had been said and Tom told me that he is an MOT tester and he knew the law. That makes this even more concerning, because someone in that position should be extremely careful when telling customers what is and is not legal. The current GOV.UK guidance makes clear that where the existing MOT is still valid, no Dangerous defects are listed, and the vehicle remains roadworthy, the vehicle is not automatically restricted to journeys to and from a garage. It is simply not acceptable to give customers misleading legal information, particularly when they have only called for a repair quote and are then frightened into believing they are committing an offence by driving their car. I will be reporting this matter to the DVSA, and I will also be making people in the Ringwood/Bournemouth area aware of what happened through local Facebook groups and Instagram pages so that others are careful about relying on incorrect MOT advice from this garage/ member of staff ( TOM ) . (I contacted the garage via our recorded 3CX business telephone system, so there is a clear evidential record of the conversation, which will be provided to the DVSA as part of my formal report.) This is not about attacking anyone personally. It is about making sure customers are given accurate information and are not misled about the law.
