At the store inside of the Orton shopping centre (i.e. not at the gas station), I encountered a very rude young man at the till. I was purchasing a bakery item, which had just been discounted by a representative that was still in the bakery section. The young man took up this item, and started looking at the discount label, and making comments that suggested that the label on the item had to belong to a different item, as it talked about a sandwich (although this item was bread). He made faces, belittling me in this way for some time, so I confronted him asking if he was suggesting that I tampered with the label. I also asked him to show me what the label really says (because even if it were possible for whatever reason - that the lady discounting the items made a mistake or such, I did not think it mentioned a sandwich). At that, the representative quit making that fuss, but he refused to show me the label. This was because while he was making his offensive comments, he detached the label from the item and threw it into the trash bin. But why has he done that, other than to destroy the evidence? Is it normal for cashiers to take labels off of grocery items at the till? I even offered to bring another piece of the same bread for us to look at together, as there were a few of them similarly discounted, but then the man said that I had been already served, thus indicating he would not talk to me about it (even as there were no other customers around/requiring service). Please do investigate and let me know if this is something to be expected regularly; if representatives amuse themselves in your store at the expense of customers, or what this occurrence was supposed to mean, as I would really like to know. I am new in this country, but something even remotely similar has never happened to me in any country around the world. I mean, if the cashier were really thinking that was not the correct price, would not he simply go and ask the representative that had just discounted it and was still at the bakery, which was actually clearly visible from the till, instead of making fuss while tearing the pertinent label off and throwing it away, and then refusing to produce it?
