A family member voluntarily had intoxalock installed. While hospitalized we tried to remove the car to a safe place. After multiple unhelpful calls to intoxalock we had to have the car towed. Customer service was exceedingly unhelpful. Repeatedly asked for supervisor intervention and refund for the month the car was not able to be used. Avoid this horrible company that has no interest in customer support. More of a scam than a useful product.

This place is horrible! Once you are a customer, forget it. You're a number, they got you and you do not matter. They misquote everything! You cannot get anyone on the phone that will help. The device failed me for zero reason and also killed a new car battery. This place is horrible.

I hate Intoxalock. Drained my battery multiple times. Unit mail functioned and I got charged for a lockout. Called to get lockout fee removed. They said, “ok” then did NOT remove it. Got it voluntary for family member. It is royal pain in the doupka. Try the other one. Maybe you’ll have better luck and pay less in fees, new batteries and jump boxes.
Frequently Asked Questions About Intoxalock Ignition Interlock
How does an interlock device work?
An ignition interlock device (IID) is a small breathalyzer installed in your vehicle to prevent it from starting if alcohol is detected on your breath. Before driving, you'll blow into the device. If your breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) is below the programmed limit, the car starts. Periodic retests occur during your trip to ensure continued compliance. To read more on Intoxalock, you can read our ignition interlock device guide.
What is the cost of an ignition interlock device?
The installation of an ignition interlock device, often called a car breathalyzer, typically costs between $70 and $150. This one-time fee is paid at the start of your lease and covers the service center's labor to install the device in your vehicle. Payment is made directly to the service center at the time of installation. For more on cost breakdowns, you can read our cost of ignition interlock device guide.
How do I use my interlock device?
Using an IID is simple. To start your vehicle, blow into the device as directed. If the device detects no alcohol, your car will start. You may be prompted for "rolling retests" while driving, where you’ll blow into the device again to confirm compliance. How-to videos are also available on the Intoxalock mobile app.

What happens if I fail a breath test on my ignition interlock device?
If you fail a breath test, your vehicle will not start, and the device will log the event. Depending on your state’s regulations, multiple failed tests may trigger additional penalties, such as lockouts or reporting to your monitoring authority. Intoxalock devices allow you to retest after a short wait if alcohol is no longer detected. Always follow your state’s guidelines to remain compliant.
Can I install an ignition interlock device in a vehicle I don’t own?
