I had a frustrating experience trying to rent a truck today. I called early in the morning, and asked what their pickup truck rental policy was. I was told that it is first come first serve, but if you call ahead they can hold it for up to 30 minutes before it's available again. On my way over early afternoon, I called again and was told someone was on the list, and they were going to pick up the truck shortly.
Upon arrival, the truck was still in the parking lot - when I asked if I could rent it, they said they're still waiting for the original person to come by, and to give them some time. I then spent an hour in the store doing some shopping, and came back after I was done - the pickup truck never left the parking lot, and no one came to pick it up during the entire hour. Asking the customer service rep if I can rent it now (mind you, no one has picked up the truck in nearly an hour and a half), the rep called the original person to remind them to come in to pick it up. Sure enough, 10 minutes later, the truck was being picked up for use, and I am left empty handed. When I brought this up, the rep said he "wouldn't want the first customer to come in and get mad that I gave you the truck instead".
In summary - spent an hour waiting for a truck (when I could have literally rented it, got my task done, and returned it in that window), left without renting a truck. This post is not meant to call out any one person in particular, but Penske/Home Depot, fix your process and stop misleading customers with an ambiguous reservation "hold" policy.
