Stay away from Sixt – damage claim trap after a few hours rental
I have rented cars many times over the years (around 10 rentals in just the last few months), and this is the first time I’ve ever had a company come after me for damage I did not cause.
I rented a GMC Acadia from Sixt at a location near the cruise terminal.
When I picked up the car, it had just come out of a very quick wash. The car was still wet, which makes it almost impossible to see small scratches properly.
I did walk around the car. It looked fine, nothing obvious, so I left with it.
I only had the car for a few hours, basically going from point A to point B with one quick stop then drop the car at the airport.
When I returned the vehicle at Miami airport, Sixt used what they described as a camera scanning system at check-in. Later, they claimed there was damage “all around” the car and sent me a bill for 1,167.79 USD.
Here’s what really bothered me:
They refused to provide “before” photos of the car. Their explanation:
They do not take photos at pickup, only at return. (they didnt have the same technology everywhere from what I understand, so it this car havent been to a place with this technoligy before they deceide that every little dammage is yours when you return to a place where they have the camera.
They told me that any prior damage would be on the paper rental agreement, and that by signing, I accepted the condition of the car.
In other words, they rely entirely on a quick pre-inspection and the customer’s walkaround, and in this case with a car that have been wash very quickly leaving stikes of dirt that could have been scratches but imossible to see, but then they use detailed photos and scanners only at return.
At one point, they even cancelled a previous damage claim on the same rental, then later came back with another damage claim and a different damage number. This feels extremely inconsistent and, in my opinion, very unfair.
Despite my emails clearly stating that I did not cause any damage and asking for proof (before and after), their final answer was basically:
“You remain responsible for the damage.”
From my perspective, this process is completely one-sided:
You pick up a wet car after a rushed wash, with no photos taken at that moment.
You return it a few hours later, and suddenly there is detailed “evidence” of multiple scratches, all documented by their return system and cameras.
They then hold you fully responsible and show no willingness to consider that the damage may have pre-existed or that their inspection conditions at pickup were inadequate.
I genuinely feel taken advantage of by their process, and it strongly discourages me from ever renting from Sixt again.
If you still decide to rent from them despite this, I strongly recommend:
Taking your own high-resolution photos and videos of every panel, wheel, bumper, and trim before leaving the lot, especially if the car is wet.
Refusing to leave with a vehicle that just came out of a wash where you cannot see the body clearly.
As for me, after this experience, my advice is simple:
