I had a horrible experience at this Advance Auto Parts location. I went in to purchase and have a new battery installed recently, and it was clear from the beginning that the employee assisting me did not know what she was doing (an older black lady). After installing the new battery, my car would not start at all. This was extremely frustrating considering my car was working perfectly fine before—my key fob, dashboard, and everything else were functioning normally. I simply needed a new battery.
Instead of properly diagnosing the issue, she called over a coworker, who was just as unhelpful. They tried another new battery, but my car still wouldn’t work. During this process, the lady repeatedly questioned how I knew I needed a new battery, despite the fact that I had already been told by my dealership that the battery had a bad signal. I’ve also worked with cars for five years and know when a battery is failing, so it felt like my knowledge was completely dismissed. She also tested the battery late but when she did she finally recognized that I was right and that this battery was no good.
Things got even more unprofessional when they asked a mechanic from Christian Brothers next door to come over and help. Even he couldn’t immediately figure out the problem. Eventually, he turned my car on by touching the key fob to the push-start button and claimed the issue was my key fob and an accessory on the push-start button, even though when I pressed on my key fob the red light would come on indicating that it was still working properly. All the dashboard lights came on, and I was told they would go away once I started driving—which they did not. I later found out from my dealership that there is a specific button to reset the dashboard.
After all the confusion, guessing, and lack of proper knowledge, I left feeling frustrated and uneasy about how my vehicle had been handled, was told by the lady to get a new key fob battery. But I knew that wasn’t the problem. My car still wasn’t working correctly, I couldn’t lock the doors with my key fob, when I turn off my car the dash usually stays on to let me know the door is open and it makes a chime sound, but when I turned it off it go’s completely black. I had to turn on the car with my key fob pressing it on the start-push button (which I never had to do before), my headlights wasn’t working properly, my e-brake light wouldn’t come on, my gas would go up and down, etc. So I took it to my personal mechanic and paid out of pocket to have it fixed. He informed me that the battery had been installed backward, and my car was working normally again
This experience was completely unprofessional and unacceptable. I would not trust this location with my vehicle again—not even for something as simple as a battery replacement. -0/10.

HOW DO BRAKES WORK?
Expand FAQ item
Brakes work by using friction to turn kinetic energy into heat. There are two designs: drum brakes (older), and disc brakes (newer). Both use hydraulic pressure to move a piston outward. In disc brakes, the piston is located inside a caliper that houses brake pads and fits over the rotor. The friction lining on the pads makes contact with the rotor to slow the vehicle. In drum brakes, the piston moves two curved shoes lined with friction material against the inside of the brake drum.
