Do yourself a huge favor and take your time before signing up with this particular company. I could have saved myself a ton of cash and headaches if I had heeded my own advice and done the appropriate research before signing any kind of contractual agreement with this outfit. There were tons of warning signs I chose to overlook because I needed my car prepped in a jiffy so I wouldn't miss time at work: Full mailboxes that didn't take anymore messages, a calling circle from hell which takes forever to maneuver, late paperwork that resulted in multiple visits to the DMV before I was good to go and last but not least a malfunctioning unit that failed to register first breath. I left a choice review which I took down after Intoxalock refunded me a large chuck of my initial fee to get rid of the negative review. Boy, do I regret doing that after the fact. Especially after I spoke with one of their customer service reps today and was treated like garbage. No explanation why the device was malfunctioning right after I cancelled my lease, but instead a lecture from someone whose interpersonal skills and manners would suit employment at a junkyard better (You know, the guy who hides behind the tiny window and only gives you yes/no answers). I spent over $150 on Uber after the device failed to recognize first breath over and over again and stranded me at work. Refund? Good friggin luck. I paid for the device for almost 16 months, but the kicker came at the very end: almost $300 to have the device removed (!) at the shop which took less than 10 minutes and then an additional $112 to Intoxalock for the privilege of ending our relationship...that's a farewell gift I could have done without! Btw the unit is the size of a brick and handles as such...there are way sleeker and smaller units available from other companies that allow an stealthier look than the Intoxalock device and just make it look old and tired. Take my advice and do your homework! Good luck! LA 04/28/2025 I received a goodwill credit to cover the amount which they tried to collect from me to close out my account. But that credit got immediately reversed after I had contacted my bank to let them know that the dispute had been resolved. If this is not shady, I don't know what is...LA 05/26/25

Frequently Asked Questions About Intoxalock Ignition Interlock

How does an interlock device work?

An ignition interlock device (IID) is a small breathalyzer installed in your vehicle to prevent it from starting if alcohol is detected on your breath. Before driving, you'll blow into the device. If your breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) is below the programmed limit, the car starts. Periodic retests occur during your trip to ensure continued compliance. What is the cost of an ignition interlock device?

The installation of an ignition interlock device, often called a car breathalyzer, typically costs between $70 and $150. This one-time fee is paid at the start of your lease and covers the service center's labor to install the device in your vehicle. Payment is made directly to the service center at the time of installation. For more on cost breakdowns, you can read our cost of ignition interlock device guide.
