I rented a Mercedes-Benz GLS450 from Sixt, and the experience raised serious vehicle safety and maintenance concerns.
On three different occasions, the car would not shift into drive. The vehicle simply would not switch gears, leaving me stuck and unable to move the car. This is not a minor inconvenience — it is a serious safety hazard. A vehicle that cannot reliably shift into drive should never be rented to customers. On one of these occasions, the issue almost caused me to miss my flight, which added unnecessary stress during travel.
For a company renting luxury vehicles, proper inspection and maintenance of cars before rental should be a basic standard. Experiencing the same malfunction multiple times during one rental raises major concerns about Sixt’s vehicle safety checks.
Additionally, this is the second time Sixt has attempted to accuse me of damage that was already present on the vehicle at pickup. Fortunately, I always record videos and take photos before leaving the lot, which clearly document the vehicle’s condition. Without that evidence, I could have easily been held responsible for damage I did not cause.
I do want to acknowledge that Kareem provided professional and courteous customer service, which I appreciated. However, good service from staff does not resolve the serious safety and vehicle condition issues I experienced.
Overall, I am extremely dissatisfied with this rental experience and will be escalating this complaint further due to the safety concerns involved.

Love Sixt, though this location had hickups.
- I booked a 7 Series as advertised, for it to be canceled 2 days later (no explanation given, no apology, no alternative). Turns out, it's inventory and the website is wrong.
-then they gave me the wrong car and made me feel like a villain at the exit.
I finally got the car that I needed, but the location needs work.
The first associate at the counter was fun and pleasant though.

The Sixt company is a bunch of crooks! They literally train their employees to pass on prior damage from past rentals to the next customer.
This happened to me twice! Once with my trip from SFO to LAX and again with my rental at their San Salvador location. Unfortunately, I booked both rentals in advance. I would’ve canceled my 2nd booking in El Salvador due to my experience with them in LA with them trying to charge me for damage I didn’t cause, which was curb rash to one of the rims, but I would’ve been charged a fee for that so I took my chances.
I didn’t believe they could possibly do the same thing in El Salvador, especially since the SUV I rented was brand new! Turns out there was curb rash just under the passenger side bumper, something you would never see unless you knew it was there. Luckily, I was ready and took a quality video this time of the entire car and was very lucky enough to capture the very minimal rash underneath the bumper.
I have no respect for a company like Sixt! Bunch of trained scammers!
Take very good pictures!
Also take a full video as well.
Videos and pictures capturing both upper and lower parts of the vehicle, including rims!
These crooks will try to ping a ding the size of a pebble on you!
The attached photos are of my two separate rentals.
SFO to LAX rental:
Are the rim pictures and curb rash they’re trying to blame me for.
Hyundai SUV pictures:
You can see the very faint rash underneath the bumper they tried pinning on me. You can see how minimal the “damage” could be and how these crooks will try their best to make an extra buck to spice up their profits.

Do not rent here. If you do, plan to spend 150% more than you agreed to. Sixt has good ratings because they are very friendly while ripping you off. If they don't manage to sneak extra charges into your agreement on the front end, they will lie and say you returned the vehicle with empty fuel or damages. Or they will do both. But they are very professional and friendly about it. The customer service is difficult to reach, condescending, and threatened me with MORE charges.

HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE! Normal rental, returned it, and they said everything was fine, then I get a damage report for a scratch on a rim of tire! I haven't been able to reach anyone in the damage/claim area, tried 4 times to call and multiple emails with no response. I would NEVER rent from them again, the bill was for $400 from a scratch on a rim that was there before. DON'T RENT FROM THEM! 2/26/26 still waiting for JEAN who responded to contact me, I think they just wrote that so they didn't look bad on Google. Today I am contacting the Better Business bureau, the state attorney general and the FTC.
