Complete and total incompetence, and tried to lie about their mistake, placing blame on the OEM factory glass, instead of accepting responsibility.
I brought my 2021 Ford Bronco First Edition into this location to have a windshield replaced. Upon dropping it off, I told the clerk behind the counter “I am an extremely picky customer, and this is a very limited production vehicle. I expect this job to be done perfectly with no exceptions. I am willing to wait as long as you need – take all the time you want – to do this job perfectly, without exception. I would much rather you take your time and do it right than rush, and I am more than happy to wait as long as you need. I’m in no hurry at all.“ I then also walked out and said the same thing to the installer.
As you can see by my photos, they could not have screwed this simple job up more if they tried. The windshield does not sit centered in the opening, but is shoved all the way to the left against the pillar with a massive gap on the right. Completely and totally unacceptable. This is one of the three most simple windshields to install in a current production vehicle. It is a simple rectangle, it is almost completely flat with very little contour. I specified OEM, factory glass so it would be correct. There are locating pins on this windshield, and slotted holes in the body that the pins fit into, and allow the windshield to be centered. It’s virtually impossible to screw up yet they did. And even after I explained how willing I was to wait for a perfect job, which was in fact what I expected.
When I asked the technician and the manager to come out and take a look at this, they both immediately told me “the OEM windshield has pins that fit into holes in the body that do not allow for movement of the windshield.” They added that it therefore cannot be centered, due to the fact that I had specified “factory glass, and not an aftermarket alternative.“ They even said that the windshield was crooked when it came in, and they had pictures to prove it. Well, upon further complaining I got a look at their pictures. One was completely blurry, and the other two showed a windshield that was installed correctly, as did my own “before” photos.
After confirming with both my vehicle manufacturer and two other glass companies that their claim regarding the pins and holes was in fact false, all three confirmed that the holes in the body are slotted, specifically so that the windshield can be centered. They are not holes as described by these two individuals that offered no ability to center the glass. Apparently they figured I’m stupid enough to believe their lie.
It’s bad enough that they didn’t do their work correctly. It’s much worse that they didn’t simply own-up to their mistake and offer to fix it, but rather chose to lie about it, apparently hoping that I would believe them and just go away. This is beyond unacceptable.
They also noted this on my invoice , which shows that the installer knew he made a mistake and tried to blame it on the vehicle manufacturer, rather than accept responsibility, before even delivering the vehicle to me.
After further complaining, and insisting that I am not accepting this job as is, they agreed to escalate it to some corporate individual who would have to review the situation and get back to me next week. So my current situation is that I’m waiting for them to accept responsibility for a job improperly completed, and a willingness to fix their mistake.
I now deeply regret trusting who I thought was a large and reputable company to correctly perform a simple job on a vehicle that I actually value, is rare, and that I take exceptional care of. If you value your vehicle, do not make the same mistake I did. Find a company that will not only do the job right, but is actually ethical and competent, and will stand behind their mistake if they make one. Obviously, Safelite – and particularly this location – is not that company. Unethical, poorly-qualified, and dishonest, from the manager down to the basic installer. That’s what you get here.
