- CBCAROLYN BOTELLJan 2, 20265.0My friend and I rented a houseboat for 3 nights to celebrate New Year’s, the rates are really affordable in the off-season and we had an amazingly good time. We splurged on a large model with a hot tub, and we used the slide off the back of the boat for a polar plunge on New Year’s Day. You aren’t able to take the house boats out on the lake in the winter because of weather and winds and current, but we were totally OK with not having the pressure of navigation. We were able to bring our kayaks and tie them off the back of the boat and go fishing. The staff were really helpful, on their phone during the booking process and in person when we arrived.I would definitely recommend renting a houseboat at Lake Don Pedro Marina in La Grange.

The food served at the Trading Post Cafe is excellent and reasonably priced, served hot and cooked to order. They provide excellent service. The restrooms are clean and spacious. The boardwalk during the day and after hours are quiet. Fishing is excellent! The last time we were there, each of us caught our limit of trout. In fact, one of the ladies who worked at the cafe was fishing with us. She and the rest of the staff were super friendly. Everyone was successful catching fish except me. I didn't bring any lures and my friend purchased the last Kastmaster sold at the cafe and was catching trout left and right. The lady saw that I was not having any success with my live bait, and offered her pole, asking only that I return it before we left the next morning. I began catching right away and caught my limit in less than an hour. But whether I caught anything or not, the service, friendliness of the staff, the beautiful boat rentals (you gotta see for yourself), everything was great. I only have one recommendation, please refuce the fee for the overnight parking; it's a bit high in my estimation when you're already renting a houseboat.
